2023-10-25 07:12:57 +0000 UTCAs a finale, I think Enemy at the Gate works well enough, but while SG1's finale was also written following an unexpected cancellation, it feels like a more polished product IMO. As a high octane, action packed final great battle of the show, this had more edge of your seat action than Unending, but where I find it falls short is in giving the characters that proper send off the Unending did so well. Keller had practically nothing to do in this episode(like 2 scenes). Woolsey also didn't do anything too special. I suppose Beckett did have that completed character arc from Rising with him finally learning how to stop worrying and love the drone chair(someone will get that reference). Zelenka at least got a W in before the end making the wormhole drive work. Most of the focus was on the main team as it should be, but even then nothing as profound as what the team went through in SG1's finale. Teyla was kinda just there outside the scene where she and Ronon reassure Woolsey of their commitment. Ronon's "death" does hit the first time because you buy that someone could die in the last episode, but then almost immediately they take it back. At least they set him and Amelia up at the end. Ditto for McKay and Keller, but otherwise Rodney doesn't really do anything out f the ordinary(The Last Man was a much more impactful look at his character for example). Sheppard definitely gets the most material to work with, and I think especially when you contrast him with where we saw he could have ended up in Vegas, he's the one character that really does have his character arc closed out fairly well. He's really shown to be highly valued for his contributions over the years(and proficiency operating ancient tech), and he doesn't hesitate to commit to a suicide mission to take out the hive, which speaks volumes of his character. It's not overly complicated, but it shows how far he's come since Rising. Lastly Unending just wrapped up the journey of the series better IMO. With the Asgard ending their civilization and handing humanity the mantle of the fifth race, it paid off 10 years of the tau'ri working their way up from the bottom. That we got to really examine the main characters as they go through a version of their future trapped on the Odyssey and really say goodbye to them just made for a nice complete episode. EatG didn't really resolve anything in Pegasus. They saved Earth, and that's great(sucks they lost the control chair though, but maybe Rodney can rig something up. The drone launcher itself should be intact), but the wraith situation in Pegasus is completely unresolved. All these issues should have been addressed in the movies, but unfortunately we never got them. It is kinda cool that O'Neill, Landry, and Hammond are all mentioned in 1 episode(might be the only case, but I'm not sure). Would have been nice to have Landry or O'Neill show up though, not that Carter and Walter cameos aren't appreciated. And we also have mentions of the 5th and 6th BC-304s. Earth's fleet keeps growing. Had there been a season 6, this would have been a perfectly fine season finale, but as a series finale, Atlantis deserved better IMO. Still it's not terrible. Other sci fi shows have had way worse finales(looking at you Enterprise).
