Aside from getting Carson out of the icebox, and giving Woolsey a trial by fire, it does also solve a key question as to how the wraith were able to defeat the ancients. If the wraith can infect someone with a virus, provide a power source, and a few days or weeks later have a fully grown hive ship, then it's no wonder their numbers were so unending. Would also explain why the cloning facility was so essential. Granted we've seen a hive operated with minimal crew before, and while they seem to heal on their own, crew do probably play some role in accelerating repairs and managing systems. At the very least, you need enough wraith to man the darts and provide security, otherwise a few wraith operating the ship could be overpowered by a small strike team that boarded on a cloaked jumper, and for all we know the ancients could figure out a control interface, now they have your hive ship. As to Keller, like you said it's was pretty much a certainty she'd live given her place in the credits, but then you remember how they did the audience dirty on Buffy with Amber Benson being included in the ep where Tara died. For Woolsey, this was sort of a continuation of the episode with the man eating bugs on SG1. The IOA makes all these rules and says "they're there for a reason", all while hardly any of them have left Earth, let alone found themselves in those kinds of situations. I think he's realizing things aren't so cut and dried in the middle of a situation as they appear reading a report with the benefit of hindsight.
