This episode caught me so off guard when I first saw it, but it really is writing genius to be like- we have a lot of exposition we need to get out to move the plot along so let's just make a musical- the format where people cram huge exposition into songs and get this plot moving. Also interesting how 'the musical episode' became much more of a trope afterwards. Buffy was one of the first to do a lot of things that have now become tropes of sci fi fantasy shows etc. so it's really interesting to see the original writing motivations for those things- from everything like the naming of the season villain as 'the big bad' to gently acknowledge the story pattern and in being self-aware stopping it becoming stale. One of the things I love about this episode is Spike hating singing the whole time he's doing it- but I will admit that moment he steps in and stops Buffy burning is one of my favourite moments because she's essentially very depressed and he helps- not by trying to pretend she can feel better, but acknowledging where she is at right now and saying the only chance to feel better is to stick around, whilst showing he still loves her regardless (whilst she's been feeling her friends are only interested in what she can do for them). It's such a powerful moment. I really enjoy this season.
