Good concept, problematic execution. I liked the idea that things have been bubbling under the surface on that planet for decades and the gate’s activation in itself was what set things off rather than anything SG-1 did. Sure, we’ve had other first contacts with relatively modern civilizations, but each time things play out differently and that keeps things interesting. What didn’t work was the pacing and the romance. The episode spends way too much time trying to develop this unnecessary and unconvincing relationship between Daniel and Leda instead of showing us the action and the fighting and the politics. It’s a shame because the episode had a lot of potential. Other thoughts: That's not the first time SG-1 came out of a museum piece - there was the polluted planet where the people were using a direct neural interface to connect to a database [Revisions]. When SG-1 met with the council for the first time, the council members told the team the stargate was part of a museum exhibit. Good call about the ring fanatics attacking. I suppose when you’ve watched that many TV shows you already know all the hints. Why was Daniel sent alone to that planet on subsequent visits? It’s stupid and dangerous under the best circumstances, and the situation here was already getting unstable. The rest of the team should've been there with him. It’s a plot hole. When Jack invites the rebels to the SGC to talk to them directly, Soren and his people walk through the stargate unaccompanied by an SG team. That has to be a serious breach of protocol since they have no way of knowing who or what will come through the gate or even which planet the wormhole is connected to. They could’ve accidentally let Ba’al’s forces into the SGC. Leda is such a classic needy woman. Nothing whatsoever special or interesting about her. Such a waste of a character.

This is one of those episodes where I love the idea, but the execution here was a bit lacking. I love stories of first contacts through the gate, because all of the ones we see have subtly different outcomes. This isn't the first time SG-1 has walked into another developed country simultaneously making an entrance as a new faction, but also as evidence of life elsewhere in the universe. Sometimes it goes relatively well, like the time Prometheus got stranded, and sometimes it goes really badly, like this one. This episode just fails at pacing, though. I found myself nodding along when you talked about how the not-really-but-kinda romance thing with Daniel was happening, and I agree, it feels tacked on. I would've rather seen them use that runtime for a bit more meat at the end, maybe a portion of SG-1 debriefing. This story is a great spot for a setup to something else in the future, so it makes me wonder why they didn't do that in the writer's room to begin with. More options for down the line isn't usually a bad thing.

Deffo could have been a decent MILFIC novel for sure

To be fair, Daniel WAS ultimately able to save Sarah from the Goa'uld.

This is a pretty unforgetable episode IMO, I didn't even remember it till I re-watched it right now, must not have struck me at first watch, kinda forgot about it. I can kind of see the concept they were going for, but it did feel rushed. I can see it was a bit of an experiment, but also a pretty slow episode, just Daniel on long walks, heh. At least the world outside where he was walking looked real, cause the city CGI was pretty bad, very fake looking. Oh well, one meh episode every once and a while isn't abnormal.

Brent Justice

Lol what? Are you all right there buddy?

Ugly Pig

Sounds odd. Since when do the goa'uld ignore head shots?

Teth

I have never seen that scene, and none of the wikis make any mention of it that I can find. It may be some deleted scene that was restored after as an alternate cut, but I don't think it's supposed to be there. It changes the story a lot if Soren is a goa'uld and not a religious fanatic.

Timothy Nikiforovs

Oh that's a good point, I hope he isn't missing parts, someone should tell him

Brent Justice

I kinda liked this but I don't know what episode failwhale had because I am watching along with a new box set addition and though out this episode there were about 3 or 4 parts missing and the end got cut off on the episode I watched soren at end when he got shot in head and they walked away soren got back up try and stab daniel and teal'c was behind too stop him and when they looked at his eyes they glowed soren wasa gaoul he might have too get a different set or somthing in rewatch too see full episode this website https://www.visualentertainment.tv/ is where I bought mine they have full lengh episodes there with nothing missing!

“I hope somone’s been feeding my Lo’Assak while I’m away” lmao poor episode but memorable line for me.

I feel like this episode really suffered from poor writing. Whether it was intended to be a longer episode or a filler episode, it was just all over the place. Too much going on. The passage of time wasn't conveyed very well which meant this relationship with Daniel and Leda, which I guess was supposed to resemble Jack and Laira, wasn't easy to connect to. Also, the actress tried her best but Michael Shanks was giving her zip. 😆 Could have been a good one but, yeah, could have done with a lot of editing on the script.

"Daniel, we're always sticking our collective noses where they don't belong - it's what we do."

You not get enough caffeine before starting this one, bud? Lmao Yeah, A lot of people seem to dislike or at least be apathetic about this episode, much of which boils down to the forced and awkward romantic drama between Leda and Daniel. Also you'd expect he'd be better than to flirt with a married woman. Still, the action in this episode was great and you really got that WW2 feel from it. The props department went all out with the vintage firearms. M1 Garands, AK 47s, MP-40s, Ppsh 41s, Kar 98s and a few others. What I do like in this episode is that this is the first time the SGC snooping around in the galaxy has had such drastic consequences. I mean in The Other Side they walked in on a war in progress, same in New Ground, and Kelowna kept their gate secret so SG1 showing up didn't change anything. Most other times like in Red Sky, it was ultimately worked out. Their arrival triggered the civil war, which led to global (presumably nuclear) war, and most of this planet's population got bodied. They can't fix that. This is their biggest screw up yet, and it's going to weigh on them going forward. Also, it cracks me up how Jack got offended at Teal'c for sitting down before Carter and himself after they met with Soren. The whole time Soren was on base Teal'c looked ready to kill someone.

Timothy Nikiforovs

Definitely not one of the favorites. I feel like they wanted to do an epic three parter but they had no room or budget, so they just crammed it all in. Maybe it would've been a good novel, which would have allowed for more than just characters explaining all the cool war stuff happening off-screen.
