Thor supervising what should have been the deaths of the Replicators isn't surprising to me in the slightest, given how they have had the Asgard on the defensive for so long, that would make this operation actually rather critical to them, at least in my estimation.

Sarah

Not the very best season opener in my opinion, but still pretty good. The promotions were deserved, though it will never be the same without Jack in the field. Weir being played by a different actress caught me by surprise too. I'm one of the people who really preferred the original It was surprising that Thor personally supervised the black hole and the replicators falling into it. He's the supreme commander of the Asgard fleet, surely he has other responsibilities and has people working for him who can monitor the situation. Him being there may have been convenient to the plot, but it made no sense. Speaking of things convenient to the plot but making no sense, why doesn't Thor's ship have projectile weapons to defend against projectiles made of replicator blocks? They've known for several years now that projectile weapons are effective against replicators. I can imagine that carrying a big gun and multiple magazines would be too heavy for an Asgard to carry, but the ship can surely handle a few guns on its hull. I was very amused by how Teal'c and Thor communicate when on their own. It's very efficient and calm, almost Vulcan. When Weir told Daniel they may have no choice but to wake up Jack in order to operate the weapon again it occurred to me they actually had a good alternative that they were ignoring: asking clO'Neill for help. It would've been nice to have his existence acknowledged for once Fifth falling in love with Sam was boring. Every other man they encounter falls in love with her. Yes she's great but this is absurd.

You think there are similarities between shows now, just wait until next season!

Same here. I had to dl ep2 & SGA from the dropbox links instead.

Before I even begin watching I just wanted to say thanks to FW34 yet again. Having one heck of a cold right now (just a cold) and been really looking forward to this. So... I've got my normally delicious breakfeast (tastes like nothing), delicious coffee (tastes like nothing, but it's warm) and plenty of tissues (not normally a requirement for me to watch star gate)... but the entertainment of the reactions is still 10/10. Every thing is good. :D Heck, even the sun is shining, which is a rarity in my parts of the world here in November.

The replicators are probably my lest favourite villains, but season 8 has a lot of great stuff to offer nonetheless. The setup is being shaken up a bit, but Jack and Sam getting promoted was well-deserved.

Teth

New camera/setup looks great! Curious to know what your updated setup is like :)

Noah ( J Holᐰ)

When Yu spat out the food, it almost felt like he was just posturing. His first prime is there like "I dunno boss, these things are kinda good"

Timothy Nikiforovs

season 8 has so many hilarious feel good episodes, some of the best

accelangel

Weir's UN joke Lord Yu Spitting the food Yu' First Prime - if we must.. die with honour! O'Neill's speech - "I insert name.."

Quick disclaimer(and without getting specific), for me personally, S8 might be my least favourite. Don't get me wrong, the production quality goes up. You noticed everything was popping a bit more, that's thanks to them shooting in HD from this ep going forward. Previously they were using 35mm, and before Nemesis it was 16mm. The budgets were clearly bigger for much of the season, and in truth there are quite a few really great, top tier episodes. It's more just as an overall product this season really didn't do it for me. I mean S1, 2 and 3 were much lower budget/quality, but quite strong for a new show, and great for building out the universe, and I loved seeing the team build up that legendary dynamic. S4-7 were legendary of course. I think it's just the change in the team dynamic that's so hard to adjust to. Fraiser being gone still hurts, and now Hammond has left. Thankfully he's not dead or anything, and his promotion is well deserved, but as you see in the intro, he's not a main anymore. Don Davis left the show as a full time actor due to health issues. O'Neill has more than earned his promotion, as did Carter, but it does feel like he's been semi benched. Bottom line, that classic core cast (plus Fraiser) has been REALLY shaken up after 7 seasons of being very consistent, save for our boy Jonas being onboard for a season. Maybe it's just me having a hard time with change. Still, there is a lot of great stuff this season. None of SG1's seasons are actually bad in my books. On the topic of promotions, this one wasn't played up, but our man Mr Chevron also got a promotion this episode. He's now a Senior Master Sergeant. Finally some recognition for all the energy he brings to that dialing sequence. Yeah, Fifth is rather cringe this episode. The replicators made a true AI(artificial incel). Kinda pulled a Spike at the end making a copy of Carter, which I assume is what you were referring to. At least finally we have a weapon that can destroy replicators on a large scale. They can still go and replicate out of sight and out of mind, but at least the asgard can stand their ground now(maybe even help us out from time to time). It would be great if they gave us some of those fancy hyperdrives that go between galaxies in minutes. Much better than the slow poke goa'uld hyperdrives the system lords offered. I'm actually surprised Danny got a ship named after him before Carter. I get O'Neill really earned the Asgard's respect, but Carter saved their homeworld back in Small Victories. Offhand I'm drawing a blank on what Daniel specifically has done for the Asgard. Maybe sticking up for the people in Red Sky, or the Cimmerians? As Geonn pointed out, the actress change was due to the previous actress being rather difficult to work with. A shame for me as I preferred her take on the role over Higginson. The SG fanbase is rather polarized on this point though. Different tastes and all. Lost City really did open up a new era for humanity. Arguably they haven't earned the power they now possess, but then, neither did the goa'uld. At any rate, it speaks to how far Earth's profile has risen to be approached as anything close to equals by the system lords. Good to see Yu back, as limited as his role is. I also liked Steve Bacic as Camulus. Rather interesting to see a goa'uld seek asylum and offer Earth help. Well I guess Apophis did that one time, but he wanted a new host, and they had a ton of beef with him. Camulus at least comes with a clean slate. If I were the president, I'd take him up on the offer. Find a nice, secluded, beach front property with all the luxuries one could ask for, keep him comfortable(and under heavy guard), and tell him that so long as he remains cooperative he can live a nice cushy life safe on Earth, but if he starts getting uppity he can quickly find himself in a dark cell under area 51, or extracted by the tok'ra. The thing is, while we have some really tough shields from the asgard, and some semi functional hyperdrives(as well as fairly powerful sublight engines), we still have a lot of gaps in technology, specifically weapons. Also we might have no means of replicating the asgard tech. Camulus could jump Earth's tech ahead by hundreds of years. Considering goa'uld are almost universally war criminals to one extent or another by our standards, the US govt has granted leniency to far more evil men for not even 1/1,000,000th the benefit(like the monsters who worked in Japan's Unit 731). In this case the potential to leverage goa'uld technology (applied in more efficient human designs) to not only defend Earth's citizens but eventually help all the enslaved humans the galaxy over makes granting a system lord asylum morally justifiable. Anyway, a pretty strong start to S8 IMO. Really sets the stage for the changes going forward. Looking forward to SGA like you wouldn't believe.

Timothy Nikiforovs

Love the new setup, looking and sounding crisp! Definitely worth the wait. I really enjoyed the first 2 eps of season 8 and I can't wait to see SGA, we're in for a real treat.

I just watched your reactions to both episodes, thank you for that. Like you, I think they were throwing a lot of stuff at us at once, but the way I see it is opening up a lot of threads for the season so they have a lot of material to flesh out over time. But it did seem like a lot of stuff, moving very fast pace. It might benefit you to watch the episodes again to absorb it all. I think the promotion for Jack is very fitting, it's honestly the right thing to do here for the SGC, he's the perfect man for the job cause he has worked the job, he more than anyone knows what's really going on out there. He's got the experience to run the SGC, and Carter's promotion is perfect also, she can now command SG1. It just works, everyone is growing up. The only thing I think they maybe should have also done is offer Teal'c some kind of official rank, maybe something new and special just for him, he's earned a lot more recognition than he gets in regards to the military. I also agree with you about Daniel, he does seem to be talking a lot faster, doesn't he ;) That's one of the things that everyone notices around this time, after Daniel came back to the show, he is talking at lightning speed lol It's kinda funny, and kind of a meme.

Brent Justice

Just the wrong labels; the first 2 links are episode 1+2 on Google drive, the second 2 links are episodes 1+2 on dropbox

Ducati

"okay we're not just going to get sucked up into a black hole relax, HOLY FUCK" lmfaoooo that was such a funny moment

accelangel

What's up with the links?

Solebat

Oh also, I think fandom eventually settled on the name "RepliCarter" for the character introduced at the end. Replicator+Carter, it makes sense. ;)

Geonn Cannon

Oh damn, that new setup is nice!!!! can't wait for the next... rest of stargate XD!

Torbrevelk

"Late EST" see above

Stef Furness

When Jack was promoted in the show the airforce made Richard Dean Anderson and Honorary General

Talon Karrde

I CANNOT WAIT FOR SGA!!!!!

DANIEL JAMES

I like to imagine the conversation Chris judge had with the showrunners. He was probably like, Hey its been 7 years! can I just stop shaving my head please? haha

Jakob

Basically what I heard at the time is that she just couldn't commit to a full schedule TV show at the time, it's fine, sometimes that's how it goes.

Brent Justice

I cannot wait, I guess i'll be up all night, cause I want to watch his reaction to it. I thought we were getting it all yesterday though. He seems to be a day or two late.

Brent Justice

Hey everyone, I think Faily forgot to include this in the comments: SGA is coming today, but it will be late EST. Hold on to your butts!

MisturSmith

SGA is still today as mentioned yesterday though right?

Ducati

This one, clearly

Timothy Nikiforovs

Which should come first, SGA season premier or this one?

Brent Justice

Jessica Steen (the original Weir) just recently came out and revealed that two things led to Weir being recast. One, she thinks she drove everyone crazy with questions about the show, the Gate, how everything worked, etc, and was basically just a nuisance. And more importantly, she's very committed to Burning Man and told the producers she had a "family commitment" when really she was going to help prepare the festival. They found out the truth and decided she was more committed to "naked drugging in the desert" than doing the show. So when it came time to lock in contracts for Atlantis, they decided to go a different route.

Geonn Cannon

LET'S GOOOOOO! S8 SG FAM! Side note: SGA is still coming. It's around 6 PM EST- the double bubble will be up rather late EST so if you are ahead timezone wise it'll be up in the morning for you. X-Files/Merlin/Office should be caught up tmrw, then Who Tuesday, and we continue on

Failwhale34

It’s finally here now for SGA
