This was supposed to be the end of Buffy, literally. It was planned for 5 seasons initially, This is why the stakes are so high in season 5, why you felt noone was safe and everyone could die. And while season 6 has its highlights (it was actually the first season I watched as a whole instead of just catching the odd episode when it was on), this would have been the ultimate send-off.

2022-05-28 08:32:45 +0000 UTCThis was supposed to be the end of the series, but everyone wanted Buffy back. It was a lovely way to wrap up the series, but I'm also grateful they continued :D Thanks so much for watching this!

2021-12-18 18:06:49 +0000 UTCGreat finale and end to amazing season. Glory is one of my favorite villains - she is so narcissistic and snarky!

2021-11-08 02:58:07 +0000 UTCGiles "She's a hero, you see. Not like up" Ben "Like us?..... wait so, you share your body with a sadistic hell god alter ego too?" Giles "Well, it's...more of an anarchist rock god alter ego, but......details. Nighty night Ben" Not much more to add that hasn't already been said. S5 and The Gift were very much written as a finale for the series, and they're definitely a high point for the show. Whisper_DVM pointed out how this episode was foreshadowed 2 years earlier, and that's just 1 example of the long term planning on this show. Gotta say, Spike had perhaps the most impressive character development in this season. I mean he was a great villain before, then he made for great comic relief when the chip made him harmless, but this whole arc of his attraction to Buffy made him incredibly creepy and pathetic. Still, huge turnaround the last few episodes with him earning not just her respect, but the rest of the group's as well. Doc said he didn't smell a soul on him, but despite this he's displayed a sense of honor, and definitely seemed to have the most pronounced reaction to Buffy's death next to Dawn. As to Anya, we do see her look up while Xander is carrying her, so she's not dead or comatose or anything. Joss Whedon has joked that she was supposed to die here but they had to keep her alive because Emma kept moving. Seems she's just banged up. Definitely one of the most emotional episodes of the series and also one of the most daring. I mean she's THE title character. If Anya or Xander or Spike or Giles has been killed, it would be a shock, but you could accept they went there. How do you have Buffy the Vampire Slayer without Buffy. I've got it, SMG plays the robot for the rest of the series. No more training with Guyles, now it's robotic upgrades and software updates with Willow. Maybe they get hold of some of that initiative tech. Electro blaster arms and pneumatic stake throwers, holy water pressure washers and retractable swords. For the rest of the show it's Buffy the Robo-vampire Slayer!!! No that's not quite right. Buffy the Vampire Robo-slayer? Hmmm, ooooh I got it, Robo-Buffy The Vampire Slayer. That's the one. Well, whatever happens in S6 looking forward to the reaction

2021-11-05 21:25:42 +0000 UTCIf you watch really carefully throughout ep22 and the previous one, at no point does Giles move faster than a snail. He always moves very slow and carefully, and in the scene during the battle when we see him fight, he's hunched over until he kills Ben. This is likely a way of showing he is still in pain from his injury. He doesn't fight for long before he gets knocked down, but when he gets knocked down, it didn't look serious enough for him to be hunched on its own. Unless the fight made his injury more sore. I imagine he may have pumped himself full of pain pills before the fight too, so he wouldn't be completely useless in the battle. Thinking of him going through the fight with that injury makes him even more of a badass. Also, I hardly ever see people mention Tara in this episode. Props to Amber Benson for her performance during this whole time when Tara's been ill due to what Glory did to her. She delivered the performance exceptionally well. That moment when the penny drops and reactors realize what "Death is your gift really means never disappoints, and it never gets old. What a great reaction, Faily. *chef's kiss* See you in season 6, my friend.

2021-11-05 17:15:36 +0000 UTCOne of my favorite finales, seasons of foreshadowing built to this moment. Buffy’s death was foreshadowed in the S3 finale. “Little miss muffet counting down from 7-3-0” 730 is 2 years in days. A common misconception is that UPN rescued this show but it actually won a bidding war against WB. It was announced a month before this episode aired that the series would be moving to UPN. Here’s an old article about it if curious (no spoilers of course since it was released prior to this episodes airing): https://www.trektoday.com/news/210401_02.shtml And one from Variety which goes into a little more detail https://www.variety.com/2001/tv/news/upn-sinks-teeth-into-wb-s-buffy-1117797571/amp/

2021-11-05 11:58:34 +0000 UTCAnd there was Aeryn on Farscape fairly recently and Daniel not too long before that, but they both respawned.

2021-11-05 05:33:14 +0000 UTCAnd Tbf, it is the season which many would argue one of the best episodes and also a character everyone loves, that's all I will say in that though :)

2021-11-05 04:46:26 +0000 UTCIt's finally time! So, do you think there is some sort of connection between Ben and glory?
Liam O'Donnell
2021-11-05 03:57:37 +0000 UTC22 is another episode I can never watch with dry eyes. You mentioned something at the end about Ben dying and the end of Glory… are you saying that Ben and Glory have a connection? If so… what kind of connection?

2021-11-04 23:16:43 +0000 UTCSo in case you didn't get it, the idea here is that death is a gift, a sacrifice, Buffy can give the world. Not that she causes death, but that her death, is a gift, and that is to the world, closing the portal. I just love that, 'cause it's not what Buffy thinks it is, till the very end, she doesn't get it, till it matters, at the very end, and our expectations about that are subverted, the whole time we think it means something else, but that's not what it meant. So her slayer vision came true. Like I said above, it's bold to kill the main character, and they actually did it, she's dead, completely dead, and burried. The only thing I wished we had seen was a funeral service, and them putting her in the ground, would have been a nice touch to solidify it in our minds.

2021-11-04 23:13:17 +0000 UTCdid you forget about Anya's rabbit fear?

2021-11-04 22:52:04 +0000 UTCAs others have said, they didn't know if the show would continue on and be picked up by another network at this point so this season was written to be a series finale. That's why we have the flashbacks at the start and everything coming full circle with Buffy sacrificing herself. I remember when UPN picked it up everyone was wondering what was going to happen in season 6 now they had officially killed Buffy off. There was massive promotional work done and a huge premiere if I remember correctly, that's how big the show was. Very interested to see what you think of season 6, it's a little controversial but I for one love it and definitely class it as one of my personal favourites.

2021-11-04 20:58:02 +0000 UTCEpisode 100, and I love how they incorporated the previous 99 in that opening montage. Still one of the greatest season finales of television ever. Top tier stuff. To be honest, I would have been fine with this being the series finale. Instead, they moved to a whole new network. lol

2021-11-04 20:35:53 +0000 UTCOne of the best season finales ever made, to cap off one of the best seasons of television ever produced.

2021-11-04 20:06:14 +0000 UTCThe show was supposed to end at season 5, but they decided to continue for 2 more seasons.

2021-11-04 19:13:16 +0000 UTCWhen it comes to the Buffy season finale, many people intitally viewed it as the series finale so this was big...

2021-11-04 18:51:56 +0000 UTCthe metaphor for season 5 is this : Dawn represents the child, innocent part of Buffy while Glory represents the pure slayer power, the merciless adult part. Throughout season 5, Buffy fears she's doomed to become that cold hearted killer, forever obliterating her inner child. At the end of The gift, Buffy understands that death is her gift and by jumping from the tower, she saves Damn (her inner child) from Glory (her cold potential future). (this comment is sponsored by The passion of the nerd's "My top ten Buffy or Angel episodes to pair with wine and a good cry" video lol)

2021-11-04 18:47:27 +0000 UTCCan't wait to see your reaction, so much has happened in S5, as the above poster noted, and now Buffy herself is dead. So bold for a series to off the main character, and no gimmicks either, she's dead dead.

2021-11-04 18:46:52 +0000 UTCBuffy's mom dies, BAM. Janet Fraiser, BOOM. And now THIS. Don't worry, no one dies in a horribly emotional way on The Office. At least not in the next week or two.......
