When the queen said "how could you possible know that" to Mprgana, it instantly reminded me of Captain brooks from Water of Mars, and guess what, its the same actor

I think the one-on-one at the end is an acceptable choice for the Queen because ultimately her husband had invaded Camelot at the beginning, he was deep into the kingdom and had already taken their lands. She becomes enraged not because he is dead, but for the manner in how he died. He did not fall in battle, he was captured and then executed. Technically, Arthur offered a sort of reasonable choice- make peace, surrender our lands, and leave. But Agravaine knew that when you send a body back to a kingdom it doesn't go with the tale of how he died, all it shows is that the king was captured and then executed- which is a diplomatic no of the highest form. It's an insult to that kingdom to disrespect the position of king in that way. The Queen acknowledges she reacted in grief, and ultimately sees that Arthur is willing to offer his life- in a sort of tribute that it should have been a king against a king, sword again sword. In offering himself he is full on willing to suffer, he's not making someone else stand in his place to remedy a political situation. This episode is so interesting because Arthur is so new to kingship, he doesn't know if he should be listening to advisors of not- he often clashed with his own father, but ultimately Uther's choices were supposedly always big picture focussed. True leadership is learning how to take and ignore advice- and this is Arthur showing a quality that makes him a legend- he starts the ep thinking being King is a solo job only, it is his decision only- but he realises his choices have consequences on every person around him, but that they all still choose for him to be their leader. And so Arthur changes. He places himself equal to them- he will fight in their stead, and also he shows appreciation for those around him. In the legends Arthur is thought to be based on a leader who was possibly able to untie several kingdoms (who almost never got along) to defend Albion (sort of England but more a decent chunk of it) from the mass invasions they were facing. Here we get the first glimpse of how Arthur as a king could be that man- because he shows respect for life. He does not devalue the life of his subordinate or his enemy just because those are the positions life has put them in. It's a cool episode into Arthur's development, I'm glad you liked it. Oh and as for Merlin- Merlin has taken lives before, which is why he is so cautious, because he knows the weight of it, the weight of the choice, and what it is to be the only one with the power to make it.

I still think I don't get this show. Only in Merlin can a main protagonist murder a person they didn't have to. Which draws a conflict which was obviously totally predictable and evidently avoidable to anyone with two spare brain cells to rub together. Plus call the person they love medieval trailertrash. 🤣 But they then still attempt to portray this pratt as a hero at the end. I can't get on board with the writing of this character at all. They didn't just pluck a clueless wonder from a sounding village and drop a crown on his head. This wally has been raised in the kingdom. I get it's a teachable moment for him. But it felt like yet another contrived fabel to make him appear nobel for the umpteenth time. We've done the poor choices and self sacrifice shtick before. I'm not feeling enough of the gradual growth I'd personally love to see, as the man becomes the legend. 🤷🏻‍♂️
