2021-09-04 02:54:08 +0000 UTCReally enjoyed this reaction. This is a great, if not the best episode of the Buffy series in the way it's put together. Loved hearing your after thoughts also, it's great to hear someone so involved with the show and taking everything in; taking in the characters journeys and motivations. Yeah, great reaction I expect the 'Darla' reaction will be just as good so I'm off to watch that now.

2021-09-01 11:01:34 +0000 UTCOne interesting part was Buffy's reaction to Spike's attempt at comforting her. She recognized it enough to be truly shocked at his actions, but was still distracted enough by what she was going through to give it a pass for the time being. Clearly both of them are uncomfortable, yet not enough to push the other away. I guess Spike knowing she was in pain already was enough to make him rethink his anger. He didn't really want to hurt her as much as he claimed, he just wanted acceptance. Soul or no soul, he clearly still understood empathy enough to know she needed comfort. His caring for her might be an aspect of his obsession with her, but it was apparently genuine enough to compel him to right action.

2021-08-11 05:12:22 +0000 UTCReally is one of the best episodes of the show for many reasons. Loved the sequences in China and New York. The subway fight always gave me Streets of Rage vibes, especially since Spike looks so much like the thugs from those games. Always great seeing the origins of Spike, Dru, Angelus and Darla to build up the history of the Buffyverse. Not sure what Buffy was expecting to learn though. It's not like there's some magic answer or single mistake to explain why a slayer loses a fight. Sooner or later, statistically speaking, someone is just going to get lucky and kill them. If you get into life and death fights for a living, no matter how good you are, eventually your luck runs out. It's clear Spike has been crushing on Buffy for a few eps now, but that scene at the end just catches you off guard. And someone I always forget the connection between Buffy telling him that he's beneath her and what the girl said back when he was human. It begs the question though, why does Spike care that Buffy is hurting? He doesn't have a soul or a conscience, and it's not simply sexual. I think the answer lies in what Drusilla said, that his value lies in his spirit and imagination. Spike is a creature or passion(who also watches Passions, with Giles apparently), and part of him is still that hopeless romantic Drusilla killed. We even see with his recklessness as part of Angelus' gang, that he isn't as logical and discreet as Angel, and he's not as one dimensional either. Angelus can be amusing when he's toying with people, but in his motivations, he's fairly dull. Even in S2 he wanted to suck Earth into hell just to be evil while Spike was more worried about losing out on the amenities of human civilization. Angelus was disgusted by the thought of love, while arguably love for Drusilla drove much of his actions early on. Angelus was always motivated by ticking off boxes on the "being evil" agenda, while Spike just wanted to feel alive. It's debatable whether he can truly feel love being devoid of a soul, perhaps it's more akin to obsession or infatuation, but either way it's a big part of what drives him. Also that's some grenade Riley had. Should have been a brick of C4 with a boom like that. Pretty slick moves taking that vamp down though, clearly getting his enhancements undone hasn't made him useless. The guy is still kind of stupid though. Now if it's me and I know a bunch of vamps are holed up in a confined space like a crypt, and I'm just a regular human, I'm going home, finding some big pickle jars, filling them with gas, screwing some cloth under the lids, and firing 3 or 4 molotov cocktails in there. Use ya brain, boy.

2021-08-11 00:17:01 +0000 UTCAbsolutely one of the best episode of the entire show. I remember watching it the first time and being completely surprised by Spike origin and by the end it all makes sense. Brilliant writing and directing. And of course James Marsters is absolutely fantastic, pulling off every nuance of the character in all its iterations.

2021-08-08 09:17:23 +0000 UTCI also really liked seeing two past slayers, since we haven't really seen many other slayers in the past it's nice to see.

2021-08-07 23:01:59 +0000 UTCSlayers have a death wish, sums it all up. Death is a big part of the Slayer. And Vampires have no fear. All they need is one good day.

2021-08-07 02:51:24 +0000 UTCGlad you liked the episode. You know this episode is the first of a two-parter that ends in "Darla" on Angel. Can't wait to see you react to that! Question: before season 5, have you ever considered Spike/Buffy ship? A lot of female watchers did, because Spike is so gorgeous and hot that of course you want your main character with him! What do you think, where do you think it will go?

2021-08-07 01:06:44 +0000 UTCNo Place Like Home, Family and Fool For Love running consecutively in the first fucking half of a season?!?! Elite. Iconic. Unmatched. There was such a strong story here with Spike, yet I love how the writers don't skimp on the quality of the side stories. We get to see Dawn proving herself as an enthusiastic ally to protect Joyce, and the Xander/Willow/Anya/Riley segment is one of my favourite graveyard scenes in the show's entire run. Genuinely makes me feel a bit sad to know that no TV show will ever top this one for me.

2021-08-06 22:16:55 +0000 UTC"What's wrong?" When Spike says that, I always get tears.

2021-08-06 22:01:55 +0000 UTCNow that I've watched your reaction - yesssss! I don't want to get into any spoilers, but this is my second favorite ep they ever did. From the "lore dump" as you call it, to the exquisite editing going back and forth during the train scene, to the unbelievable acting job by James Marsters. All while still bringing in story beats about Buffy's mortality, Joyce's health, and Riley's bad decisions. Just a stellar episode all around. So glad you enjoyed it as much as you did!

2021-08-06 21:55:39 +0000 UTCFailwhale, not only was that arguably the best episode of Buffy so far, it was arguably your best reaction to Buffy. Question: did you howl with the opening credits? You made a “whoo-hoo!” Was that supposed to be the howl?

2021-08-06 21:32:48 +0000 UTC100% GOAT ep, yesss - always in my top ten episodes when people ask. Absolutely loved all your comments. 😍
