Like I wrote in my previous comment for "Colony", this two-parter changed the way I looked at the series. It is exceptional.

2021-07-11 22:58:33 +0000 UTCIt's so great to think back to earlier alien mythology episodes, and how little they actually walked away knowing, only to have Mulder's faith in the paranormal vindicated. He may not have proof, but he KNOWS he was right now, and he has the faith to keep pursuing his beliefs. And there's just something about the atmosphere this show can create that's really unique. Those scenes where Mulder or Scully is going through some dark hallway with a flashlight, and you have no idea what's around the corner....... sure there are scenes like that in other shows, but something(maybe the soundtrack) makes those scenes really stand out in the X Files. This show can give that aura of spooky mystery like no other. And yes, Skinner is awesome here. He definitely felt like a new roadblock to them when he was introduced, and he can still be a hardass, but ever since he told his story about his experiences in Vietnam, he became a much more sympathetic character. More than once now he's stepped up for Mulder and Scully, and I love the determination to go head to head(literally) with this clearly very unscrupulous character, even with a gun in his face. Definitely the MVP of this episode. I think while Duane Barry and Ascension were the first big 2 parter that really drew the audience in with writing and suspense, this 2 parter is where the themes of alien presence on Earth started to crystalize and took the show to the next level. This isn't some enigmatic asgard looking grey aliens or an inexplicable light in the sky, these are talking aliens with an agenda on Earth beyond human interests. Definitely elevated the show a lot.

2021-07-10 20:05:26 +0000 UTCI'm glad to hear you're starting to like Skinner. He is certainly a hard ass but when it comes down to it he's a real one. We have to keep in mind his office is likely bugged so he can never side with them vocally. Too many people listening in.
