2022-11-26 13:55:40 +0000 UTCI wanted to like this episode but never quite managed to. I like the attempt to connect a lot of loose threads, in this episode and in general on the show. Them still digging at the site they found the other gate is cool, and finding what might be an ancient is even cooler. I didn't like the part where they used literal magic to heal everyone. I love sci-fi, fantasy not as much. Would've been much better if they had the regular humans experience the disease differently to Ayiana, because we are told that there are physical differences, and heal on their own. They could've still had Jack become very sick and need the Tok'ra. We've seen him react differently to alien disease before, in s01e05. I found it surprising everyone immediately jumped to humans evolving more than once after evidence suggested Ayiana was several million years old. If I was one of the characters in that episode I'd wonder if she was an advanced human from the distant future who accidentally traveled back in time through the stargate, like in '1969'. The last things I'd like to point out have to do with the Tok'ra. First, I don't understand why they always act like it's incredibly urgent to find new hosts, making it seem like life or death, when we've seen Lantesh being kept alive in a little aquarium for what I understood to have been a long time, possibly months. That would also make it unnecessary for a symbiote to commit suicide if their host doesn't want them - they could get out and wait in the aquarium until a willing host is found. And with that in mind, it seems incredibly silly that in 2,000 years of resisting the Goa'uld they haven't worked out a way to communicate directly with a symbiote that doesn't have a host. Surely they've had hosts die without the symbiote dying with them before. The symbiote is small and internal, lots of kinds of injuries could kill the host while leaving the symbiote undamaged. The symbiotes must be able to send and receive neural impulses to communicate with the host's brain, so that would seem like the perfect mechanism around which to build a communication device. I know I'm probably overthinking things, but I like overthinking things and this feels like the right place to share.

If naming the series' name is a spoil, I think that some people might be a bit oversensitive. lol I mean, it's like naming Stargate for someone who has not watched any episode yet. Ok, we're spoiling him, the series is about a "Stargate". LOL

If you feel that strongly about it, maybe you should pay more attention - you could have just skipped July membership and saved us all your asinine entitlement comments. I've missed him this week too, but it's seriously not the end of the world, and I'd think any good Stargate fan would understand and embrace that perspective.

I didn't like that fact either, considering it's hard to avoid the series name when he goes to look it up to watch it. IMO, series names are not spoilers, cause how else can you be recommended to watch something, someone has to tell him the name so he know it exists, and suggests to watch it.

I noticed in an episode a few back, Jack yelled at anyone who told him Good Luck, yet he almost seemed relieved when Sam did it. Then come to this episode. He wasn't going to do it until she explained the importance of it, and she all but begged him to. I think it shows how much he trusts her.

The trope is that she'd be evil, or some kind of threat, and trick everyone, then do something nefarious. That's what we've come to expect, but our expectations are subverted when she just wanted to heal everyone and save everyone, even if it meant sacrificing herself to do it. That's pretty amazing.

Some people love it, if only for the lore dump, others hate the cliffhangar ending, others find it boring, the range of opinions is really broad. Personally my mindset has always been to "go with the flow" with shows and see where they take me, so even things like that cliffhanger ending never bother me. Only thing that bothers me is straight up stupid decisions/writing, which fortunately SG1 has very little of. It's funny that you say this one feels like an X Files ep given the actor who plays one of the Lone Gunmen is in it. The next ep though feels the most like an XF episode out of the entire show in my book. Even shares a filming location. Others have already pointed out a lot of the connections to previous tidbits of lore, particularly those from Window of Opportunity and the various eps dealing with hok'taurs. I think this episode is great because it takes all these scattered threads of lore and starts to weave a tapestry with them. It's a credit to the writers that they can take these little disconnected pieces of info from over the series and combine them convincingly. Also that the ancients were around as long as 50 million years ago and as recently as 3 million years ago is pretty astonishing. It's almost inconceivable for a civilization to last that long. Also there's a little callback to Beneath the Surface when Jack said he remembered a bald man in a short sleeved shirt who is very important to him who he thought was named Homer. Here again he says The Simpsons is important to him. RDA is himself a die hard Simpsons fan and funny enough, SG1 exists as a fictional series within the Simpsons, which is weird to think about. I also like that they addressed the Antarctic DHD running out of power, explaining why they didn't use it to save Teal'c in 48 Hours or to replace the SGC dialing computer(certainly would be faster when they're trying to dial out before someone else can dial in). Jokes on them though because they completely missed the micro USB charging port. Plug that baby in for a few.....million years, and it'll be good as new. I always felt that Jonas was crushing pretty hard on Ayiana. There's obviously not much you can do with a character that has so little dialogue, but she came across pretty selfless all the same. Sure she probably knew she was dying anyway, but even after being thawed out after millions of years and being surrounded by strangers, she gave everything to try and save them. Really sad scene near the end when Jonas says "I want you to live", and the last thing she says is "sorry". They really do leave you hanging at the end though. We all know O'Neill is none too fond of the tok'ra, but you'd figure that if the alternative is death, he'd see reason. Still, I think O'Neill would himself rather have died than become blended even temporarily with a tok'ra. Jack has always been rather bigoted where they are concerned, and admittedly the tok'ra haven't done a whole lot to change his mind. I think the reason he finally agreed and the reason they whipped out the Sam/Jack romantic theme is that he saw how much his dying was hurting her. Without that I don't think he would have accepted. Important episode, and a pretty decent watch despite the pacing issues. Looking forward to the next few weeks. Good stuff coming up.

In this one, she's basically Janet's right hand. I like to think that she's spent the time in between learning some basic medical stuff so she won't feel that useless again.

2021-06-25 11:21:52 +0000 UTCYou're starting to see the introduction of more longer (even multi-season and multi-*series*) arcs that become a feature rather than a bug, is I think why it feels a little different - you still get the smaller single episode arcs but they start to thin out a little more and you get more into big, meaty lore (up to this point lore has been thin on the ground and dropped in more hints than explanations). Frankly the whole season is a massive game-change, and in my view for the better. I recall at the time it caused a lot of people distress (especially the JQ stuff) but everything that stems from it is Peak Stargate in my view. There's a reason I don't remember much from before this point and remember everything from after it - when I do rewatches I often *start* from this stage.

Maybe it's because of the x-files and the Thing, but (ant)arctic bases always creep me out. Lots of lore here too that'll be explored more later on.

2021-06-25 07:03:31 +0000 UTCFYI, Pineapples are put at the entrance of doors to represent hospitality and welcoming, and friendship. It's a cultural thing I think. So this episode is strictly set up as a lore episode. Even the virus is really just part of the episode to facilitate the lore and let that happen. The one gripe I will make about the episode is that they did try and stuff a lot in there at once, I think the O'Neill thing could have been saved for a second part, they shoulda made this a two-parter IMO. It felt tacked on to the back part of the episode, and the main event (Ayiana) got pushed aside. Now for the important part here, it's all the lore and info dropping we just got. It starts off by saying that the DHD's power source is not limitless, it does have a limit, but they still last a really really really long time. They estimate the Antarctic gate is 50 million years old, just think about that for a minute, think about how old that is. That's one of the oldest gates they have ever found. Naturally, the Ancients would be even older than that, as it takes time to build up to that level of technology. So their species could be even way older. Remember, the continents used to be in a different configuration, Antarctica didn't always use to be frozen. It was temperate at one time in Earth's past. Then we find Ayiana who is at least 3 million years old, possibly older. Yet, she looks human. This pre-dates human evolution as we know it. That means there is now evidence that humans may not be the first evolution of humans. What if there was a species of humans that evolved before current humans, what if we are the second evolution, what if we look like her cause we evolved from that form. Food for thought. Now, as to the virus, and the fact that they think she is/was an Ancient, in some form of their evolution, remember in a past episode (the one where they kept repeating the same time) it was said that was a planet of Ancients, and they tried to create time travel because of a disease? But in the end, they just gave up and let the end come? Yep. You should definitely be thinking about that episode and making some connections. As for the more evolved human bit, keep in mind Nirti wanted to advanced humans in their evolutionary stage, apparently, humans can be evolved to gain powers like telekinesis. So if a human can evolve to gain such abilities, then maybe Ayiana's species could as well. Maybe she's a very advanced version of what we could become? Makes you think.

Very weird choice that feels like a last minute rewrite or addition. Maybe that's what the next episode is going to be, but in that case I would have expected "to be continued". Odd episode, that like you said felt like a few things mushed together.

Dr. Jackson was able to learn that the Ancients were dying from a plague and attempted to use the Time Machine to change things, but ultimately failed to change their fate. Here, we have a suspected Ancient, and... she's dying from a plague.
