I think they made a major mistake with Jonas' character. It seems the writers were so eager to fill in Daniel's spot that they not only created a character that is way too similar for my taste, but they also gave him a literal superpower, namely the ability to quickly memorize anything, in order for him to be able to catch up quickly and become a useful member of the team. That superpower was not only annoying and unrealistic, it also took away so many potential hurdles that he might've otherwise have had to overcome. Overcoming such hurdles could've been a nice addition to many stories and would've helped build his character. But no, it was a quick and easy case of inexplicable superpowers. If it wasn't for that I probably would've liked him, but as it is I see the character as a rushed patch and a wasted opportunity.

Finally caught up with the reactions. I don't have much to say that hasn't already been said in the comments here. So I'll just say, yay for the 302, Earth's first 'built from the ground up' alien/earth hybrid aircraft. That's pretty major. Althought the hyperspace window generator won't work for it, even without that, I bet it'll be a formidable craft. Just the ability to have something that can go from ground to air to space, and back again, is pretty major for Earth to have. Until now we were limited to only atmosphere or only space with the space shuttle. Now the 302 can do both very quickly with ease and with sublight engines is still fast enough to travel around the solar system at least. Also, BTW, Intertial Dampeners are what allow the craft to make fast and tight maneuvers very quickly without feeling the effects of G Forces. It basically removes the G Force effect. It's alien tech. We don't have a real-world system like that yet, so that is one of the major components of these craft that allow them to hit speeds and make maneuvers like nothing else. Oh and when Jack is going over the checklist in the cockpit and he says "Phasers" that's a Star Trek reference. You hear Star Trek referenced a few times in the series. Obviously the 302 doesn't have phasers, but that would be neat :p

Brent Justice

yea same; thought it would be a special because of the 2 part episode... :/

Nev

I'm a little confused, does a thursday double bubble mean we don't get a friday episode? :(

MisturSmith

I was so distraught over the loss of Daniel upon first watch, I don't really remember much of S6. I only re-visited a few of the eps over the years. But that's why I'm especially excited to rewatch it now.

indaeo

Koala Banana I didn't spoil anything he doesn't know what I'm talking about I simply said I was excited to see his reaction.

Thomas Thorburn

please don't talk about things to come. At all.

Koala Banana

S6 is my least favorite season. Not just because I didn't like Jonas, but I thought the episodes were particularly weak, although of course there are some standout great episodes like these two. Interesting that there is so much love for S6 here, never knew people felt that way! :)

Daniel O'Brien

The F-302, Probably the single sexiest sci-fi space fighter, no its not called the F-302303 ;)

brad hawkes

must be just me, but I always interpreted that dialogue differently. I always thought Sam just left him hanging and her "we call each other every morning" was a J cut, where the audio from the next scene starts playing before the visuals switch over. I always thought she was referring to calling Dr Murphy every morning about the 302. Maybe just the audio sounded more "outdoors" if that makes sense.

Timothy Nikiforovs

I never realised that with the Name positions in the intro. Interesting. But I prefer the one before that one. Giving you the egypt vibes. Loving that. :)

Fanny H.

I don't know how or why I laughed so hard at the "What colour do we wear?" joke. I mean sometimes they wear green and sometimes they wear blue, but I never thought about it. "We call each other every morning" indeed! Jones takes some getting used to, but I think he'll grow on you. He certainly did for me. It helps that s6 is such a strong season with some great new ideas and frontiers for the show to explore. And I know some people get really annoyed at the child actors, but I've really appreciated that we've seen the same Rya'c grow up from a child to a teenager here. It can't be easy growing up without Teal'c even if he knows he's out there fighting for their people, and you really feel for the both of them.

Teth

I really look forward to the rest of your reactions on S6. Loved the first two episodes. Even Rodney. Liked his interactions with Sam here. And that so much was going on.

Fanny H.

Jonas: "Hey Major? How, do I know what color to wear?" Sam: "*grinning* We call each other every morning." That one still cracks me up :D Not to mention this one: Jonas: "Still... I'm usually much better at reading people." Sokolov: "MAJOR... WHY WASN'T INFORMED ABOUT THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE X-302???" Jonas: "For example, it might not be that obvious to everyone, but this man is actually very upset."

78stonewobble

Ngl, it took me kinda a long while to get used to Jonas but eventually I did. He's a good character. Now I enjoy s6 more than I did growing up.

Jo

I have been waiting on this one for months. This was the first ep of SG1 during the SciFi era, and they didn't hold back. This episode is loaded with themes of healing, rebirth, and of course redemption. Teal'c earned redemption for being an absentee father Rya'c earned redemption for succumbing to Apophis' brainwashing(and yes, it's the same actor, but it's been 3.5 years) Jonas earned redemption for letting Daniel die to save his people McKay earned redemption for being an insufferable ass And the Tau'ri earned redemption for the X301 and every other failure and misstep of the stargate program, because at long last Earth is in the ascendant. The X302 is one small step on the way to joining the list of interstellar civilizations, and one giant leap toward becoming the 5th race as the asgard predicted back in S2. Humans are finally wading out into the deep end technologically. No more hand me downs, now we build our own. Finally a new intro, though a short lived one. Again a quick reminder to Failwhale if he reads this to skip the intro until you get to ep7. On the surface it's a little more animated than the Ra statue intro(and seriously, the guy has been dead for years now), but still a little boring. Still, there's a little bit of interesting symbolism going on. RDA's name shows up just before the Earth point of origin goes by, and Tapping's name appears over a nice panning shot of the same symbol. After that Chris Judge's name shows up over the Chulak point of origin, and Corin Nemec's name appears over one of the symbols for his home planet. Don Davis on the other hand holds on one of the chevrons while various glyphs go by, perhaps symbolizing that while he doesn't go anywhere, his interests and responsibilities span many worlds. Not sure how intentional all that is, but just something I noticed. So lets talk about Jonas. Jonas is at first glance kind of a Gary Stu. I mean he's a nerd, but he's as fit as a marine(not so bad), he thinks of the obvious solution everyone else missed on a couple occasions(OK maybe he's clever and didn't have as much pressure on him), but the guy seriously just strolls in and in 3 months memorizes ALL of Daniel's life's work?!? Daniel was 37, and had spent close to 2 decades studying ancient Earth civilizations, and later alien ones, memorizing alien languages, learning about lost technologies and the history of the galaxy, and this guy just comes in and absorbs it in 3 frickin months? Did he plug in some USB drives and download it? Now to be fair, looking back on Meridian, it's pretty clear they were setting him up as a successor to Daniel, and as Hammond said Jackson's expertise and viewpoint were worth replacing, so they did have to prep Jonas for that role on short notice. I do like that Jonas wasn't welcomed at first and really had to prove himself, as well as the fact that Teal'c was the first to stand up for him, being that Teal'c is an alien who also had to prove his loyalty. Still, I think Jonas comes across as very genuine and truly wants to atone for what happened to Daniel. I think he has a lot to offer the team. I also want to give credit to the episode's soundtrack. Every SG1 season brings new music, but Redemption is one of the strongest showings for new music in the entire series. Some great pieces when Rya'c was taking down the stargate killer, when we switch to O'Neill in the 302 on top of the 747, and I always found the music that played during Drey'auc's funeral incredibly impactful, just a beautiful piece of music. Speaking of which Redemption is easily one of my favourite episodes in regards to Teal'c's family. As much as we understand why Teal'c chose to join SG1, and despite the fact that he's been mentioned to have visited his wife and son several times since we last saw Rya'c back in mid S2, the fact is from Rya'c perspective, Teal'c really did abandon him and his mother. It's only natural for him to be angry. Bra'tac really shines as a character in this episode as well, first to step in and smack some sense into Rya'c(haven't had a proper "hmph" from him in a while), and second when helping Teal'c understand why his son is so angry. That whole conversation about self doubt and the need to prove oneself was top tier dialogue, and "because you are his father, and you have not told him otherwise" is one of my all time favourite Bra'tac quotes. I'm sure many children and parents alike can relate to that line. Often what causes the greatest rifts in family are not the things we say and do, but the things we don't. As usual Bra'tac brings his signature wisdom to the table and helps a father and son heal their relationship. Chris Judge also gave a compelling performance here, and it always gets me a little choked up when he opens up about his own experience being brainwashed by Apophis. After all the losses suffered in S5 and now Teal'c loses his wife as well, we needed something good to happen. Rya'c himself has huge growth as a character here. He was little more than a bratty kid last time we met him, and sure enough he's mostly an arrogant teenager here. Still, when 2 former first primes fail to destroy Anubis' weapon and he saves the day by getting crafty and stealing a glider, it's a full on "Luke Skywalker takes down the Death Star" moment for him(I'm sure Teal'c would appreciate the comparison). Despite being doubted, he stepped up, got his crazy on, and accomplished the mission. I also like that Jack is like an uncle to him at the end there. There's a nice turnaround for McKay here as well. He may still be an ass to work with, but he's not so inhumane as to write off someone's life to an estimate, and he at least treats Sam with a modicum of respect for a change. There's a human being in there now, which is a huge step up from the rather distasteful little man we met in 48 Hours. Now, 👏, let's talk about that sexy beast of a starfighter. So compared to the death glider, the 302 is huge, as evidenced by how small the gate is underneath it. It also clearly doesn't have as efficient or powerful engines as the glider, which as we saw with the 301 could basically shoot the craft out to Jupiter in no time. Also I think you missed the dialogue about the inertial dampers. Jack and Sam wouldn't have felt too much when they dodged the hyperspace window since the system takes, as the name implies, inertia out of the equation. It's also why the 302 can pull an X-Wingesque "dogfight in space" maneuver like that. As Carter said the system basically reduces the fighter's mass (and that of the pilot) and either nullifies or redirects inertia so you don't keep drifting sideways when you pull a turn. Obviously it doesn't kill all inertia or you'd have to keep running the engines to maintain speed, which is very inefficient, and the 301 shut down it's engines and drifted in Tangent. Of course the system was never designed to encompass a stargate or compensate for almost 30 tons of cargo(basically the weight of a fully loaded garbage truck), so it was probably burning fuel 50x faster per km travelled with the gate strapped to it. With the inertial dampers on under normal flight conditions those engines are effectively only having to push a small fraction of the weight of the craft, so the 302's fuel will last quite a while normally, and the frame and pilot will be able to pull off maneuvers that neither would otherwise survive in any jet fighter. We don't really get any sense of what armaments the 302 has, but as the P90 Vs. staff weapon demonstration showed back in The Warrior, the efficiency of Tau'ri design can more than compensate for the gap in tech with the goa'uld, and that gap is closing. Now on the one hand, the hyperspace generator was only partially successful, and that shiny new prototype didn't last long, but even unfinished Earth's first prototype interstellar craft was enough to save the planet, so I see no reason to think the 302 isn't here to stay. The 301 was a failure, albeit one that taught Earth quite a few lessons. The 302 was completely human built and a smashing success, and nobody is gonna be able to disrespect us saying we slapped USAF stickers of alien tech and called it our own(looking at you Jacob😠). We took our shot in the interstellar tech club and hit just outside the bullseye. And there's that blink and you miss it mention of the 303 near the end, so there's yet another project in the works. Anyone's guess what it could be, but Earth is finding it's footing at last. Another thing you seem to have missed is that we didn't get a new gate at the end, we got the old one. Remember they beamed the original Egypt gate up to Thor's ship in Nemesis and the Russians eventually scooped it up off the ocean floor, while the SGC started using the Antartica gate which was destroyed here. Admittedly it's confusing since they kept showing the "pyramid with the sun above" glyph for the last 2 years even though that symbol was only on the Russian gate. At any rate, we now have the original gate back(even though the Antartica gate is actually Earth's original gate, but...I...you know what I mean). I also do like the greater collaboration between the US and Russia. Perhaps we'll see the Russian SG team at some point. Finally a few closing observations and trivia. Lt Simmons(the only non main character to thus far escape Carter's black widow curse) returns after an absence of over 3 years. Also O'Neill's injury and limp in this episode were written due to a real life injury he suffered when he fell while carrying his 3 year old daughter, much in the same fashion as Michael Shanks appendectomy was written into Nemesis. Lastly the shot of the 302 cockpit module splashing down is actually real life footage of the Apollo 13 command module from 1970. In closing, Redemption really is a game changer of an episode in many ways, and on top of all I mentioned it's great to see the Jaffa bouncing back from their setback in The Warrior. Earth needs allies and the Jaffa stepped up and helped, so we can definitely put that in the win column. Also we don't see him, but clearly Shaq'rel survived. Neither Teal'c, Bra'tac, or Rya'c were flying the cargo ship in that last shot of it heading for Earth, and it still had staff cannon blast marks on the back so it's the same one they arrived in. Earth's fortunes really turned around here after a season of heavy losses and the show overall picked up a huge amount of momentum on multiple fronts. I used to consider S6 a step down from S5 mostly because the loss of Daniel (also my favourite character) was still really raw and for the same reason I didn't want to give Jonas a chance. In retrospect that was unfair and I missed out on enjoying a great season and a great character as much as I should have.

Timothy Nikiforovs

The gliders are called x-302 and fun fact the gate the Russians gave them is the original gate that was beamed aboard an asgard ship at the end of season 3 when they were trying to stop the replicaters from reaching earth. Also that tease that Hammond gave boy I can't wait for that you'd reaction will be priceless.

Thomas Thorburn

Yeah, I think gets a bad rap because he did replace a fan favourite, but he's a great character

Timothy Nikiforovs

Loved General Hammond's tease that I'm pretty sure was missed... 😋

James Yancy

I really do love this season, I'm very excited. :) And the first time I watched, it definitely felt weird and new to have a new team member, but Jonas is legitimately one of my favorite characters - like top two. I hope you end up loving him as much as I do!

Lady Beyond The Wall

Oh shoot, DOUBLE BUBBLE!!

been waiting on this one ever since I rewatched S6 last year.

Timothy Nikiforovs

Double bubble 👀
