Yep. There are a lot of red herrings but it's a really enjoyable episode if you look at it from that perspective. It's trying to throw you off.

So, basically, a whole town that's being experimented on by the government, that's the creep part, that they can do something like this in subterfuge and no one knows it, big experiments like this going on, long term... what else is going on out there.....

2021-05-21 14:44:33 +0000 UTCYou just watched one of the most convoluted X-Files episodes. There are fans who had to do multiple viewings to figure out what exactly is going on. From a structural standpoint it is really all over the place, exactly as you pointed out. It's basically mythology masked as a standalone episode. It makes you think it's one thing and then turns out to be something entirely different. You have no idea where it's going throughout the first half. You have a weird cult, you have bad teenagers, you've got kidnappings and victims being drugged, you have a "peeping tom", discussions about growth hormone etc., and then it leads you to alien DNA and Deep Throat's killer (Crew-Cut-Man). To be honest, it's an episode I didn't enjoy at first until I watched it again years later after its original airing. Now it's an episode I really like. It's a weird one for sure, but mostly because of its complexity. And Deep Throat's death getting avenged is a good thing for sure. So yeah... a very complex episode that confuses the hell out of many people, including some long time fans.
