The scene where Faith is beating the f out of herself, still so powerful!

Cristina Sanchez

Buffy "do you want me to continue" Giles "actually I beg you to stop" Buffy "what's a stevedore?" ROFL, I love the callback and how that question is still in her head. Just grab a dictionary Buffy. Also Giles' over the top acting at the church killed me. This episode is a turning point for Faith I think. I think Faith's real weakness is needing to belong, and needing it desperately. At the same time though, her ego demands that she never let on that she needs anyone. Its a dangerous combination that drives almost everything she's done. IIRC she had no real parental figure to look up to and had to rely on herself from a young age. The only way she ever got any attention was either through showing off and being reckless or with sex, so obviously that shaped her "bad girl" personality. In the scooby gang she always played second fiddle to Buffy, her first watcher was just manipulating her for her own gain, and when she screwed up and killed the man in the alley, she blamed it on Buffy because she felt it would cost her the little bit of acceptance she had found with the group. Then instead of trying to rehabilitate her as Angel tried to, her second watcher essentially tried to throw her to the wolves like a problem he didn't want to deal with. It's no wonder that she threw in with the mayor when he was the first person to have her back without reservation, and have genuine affection for her at that. If doing whatever evil little chores he had for her was a way to keep that, she'd do it without reservation. What happened here was Faith got a chance to see first hand all the things Buffy has that she was missing. Real friends, parents who care(granted her dad isn't around, but still probably a lot more of a father than Faith ever had), a boyfriend who isn't just using her for sex. I think Faith always saw "being good" as not only boring, but thankless. When she saved the girl from the vampire, it was a chore to maintain the guise of Buffy, but seeing someone grateful for the help, someone who needed her to care, I think made her realize that Buffy has all those things Faith wants BECAUSE she's good, not in spite of it. I think the end with her pummeling her own body was anger and frustration at the realization of everything she had robber herself of by pushing people away and playing the tough girl all those years. Definitely some introspection ahead for that one. Also Gellar did a decent job of acting out Faith's mannerisms, but Dushku as Buffy blew her away in my book. One of the most seamless examples of acting someone else's character in these body swap type episodes.

It was interesting having Faith use the phrase 'Because it is wrong' throughout the episode - 1st in a condescending way, then with Spike in a playful way, but when she said it in the church she actually meant it.

OH, and once again I do want to point out, Faith was right about Joyce and Buffy, Buffy hasn't been hanging around the house much, and hasn't been paying her mom much attention. So Joyce has been home, no one there to keep her company. Buffy has been kind of neglecting her mother, and it wouldn't hurt her to spend more time with her. Just something I noticed.

It's obvious Faith is literally beating herself up, by the end she realizes how bad off she really is, and pretty much hates herself, and her behavior. She doesn't really want to be like this, but doesn't know any other way to be. So her going to the church is her trying to play the good guy, and do what's right. As for the sleeping with Riley thing, remember, Faith just uses guys, she is used to using a guy, she's not used to a real loving relationship, so when Faith says "what do you want from her" she thinks Riley is using Buffy because he is so nice, and it's real love. Faith doesn't know what real love is. This whole episode is really about Faith living in Buffy's shoes and realizing the truth of everything: that helping people just to help them doesn't mean requiring anything from them, what true love is, and then literally facing herself, her inner demons.

Straight up, my favourite episode of this show, I'm a sucker for a good bodyswap and this is peerfect. It always drives me up the wall when shows do a body swap and straight up switch the voices, so this route with imitation was just beautiful to me. The in depth look at faith as a person, and seeing her react with like confusion and disgust and... almost fear when she sees all the support structures that buffy has in her life and all the people who care about her. And the reaction to feeling gratitude. Ahh so good. The performances blow me away here. I almost wish we got longer with each of them. I feel like you get to know a character even more when see see another actor portray them?? Like you notice those elements more so when they're different? I don't know quite what I'm saying but I just LOVE it.

Great episode and loved your reaction as always! I am always impressed with Elisa and SMG's performances. So sad that the first time Riley says ILU is to Faith and not Buffy. The scene with Faith & Spike is amazing. Glad you enjoyed it more than you anticipated you would.

I love this episode! It only occurred to me now, after 20+ years of watching it that the episode title refers to Tara (as well as to the Faith/Buffy of it all). Love the performances from Alyson and Amber in this. It's so fascinating to me how much of an insight Buffy now has into how a) people react to Faith (standing in for anyone who's done awful things) by degrading and diminishing her, and how that feels, and b) how The Council's treatment of slayers with any humanity or dignity is completely contingent on the slayer behaving how she's 'supposed' to. Of course, Buffy isn't worried about that on one level- she doesn't want to kill/hurt people- but it must play on her mind that the Council's response if she doesn't live up to their expectations/standards, then who knows what they'll try to do.

Kudos to SMG and ED for turning in some great performances. You can really tell they both studied the other's mannerisms, body language, and speech patterns.

With regards to Faith going to the church - I think it showed a glimmer of hope that Faith can accept responsibilities to her fellow man. She wanted to be the chosen "one" so badly, but it didn't really seem to occur to her until now that it comes with tremendous pressure to save the world.

11:32 - that can be a meme! And I'm sure I wasn't the only one that rewatched that scene several times. ))))
