I think sharing the ion cannons with Earth was because they needed a lot of trinium fast to meet the bomb production schedule set by the Goa'uld, and nothing else mattered at that moment. I don't see any other good explanation. If they didn't really need the trinium then they wouldn't have asked because that was very risky [and indeed ended up in the destruction of their planet]. They clearly didn't mean for Earth to find out what had happened or else Travell would've told them herself when she turned off the recording devices in her office.

Least creepy love interests LOL Sad but true

Thirty...eight...thirty-eight. Love the delivery of those lines by Jack and Daniel! Lol

After this episode, I was thinking to myself : "We have a new System Lord with technologically advanced shields who can resist one of the most powerful defence system that we've seen so far. Earth's defence only relies on the Asgards' commitment to protect us, although they don't have ships available to come resue us due the fact that their whole fleet is focusing on the war against Replicators". Basically, Earth is defenseless. However, since this new system lord is trying to avoid directly violating the treaty with the Asgards, we can hope that he is still enough afraid of them to not even try attempting to get their attention. Of course, I know what will happen next because I've seen the series multiple times but I'll leave it there for now!

Yan Brassard

he was probably thinking Jaffa before he realized that wouldn't apply if she was taken as a host

Without spoilers, I'm gonna say no. Whoever is behind the goa'uld's new shields, they clearly change the game and have already rendered the Tollan a much less important player. Would they still be an advanced ally? Sure. But still, they were only willing to share ion cannons with Earth because A - They were now somewhat useless, and B - they had to have figured out that the goa'uld were going to use the phasing bombs on earth anyway. So had the Tollan survived the writers could just have kept them as isolationist as they'd been in the past and as unwilling to share any really useful tech as before. No I think the writers just wanted to hurt Earth by taking away one of their allies so their backs are up against the wall and the stakes are raised.

Timothy Nikiforovs

Yeah, when O'Neill says "you're the one in grey" I always think "at least the clothes match the personality". But Narim is a good man nonetheless. Martouf was generally a likeable character and I'd say more interesting/memorable than Narim, but there was something rather creepy(even more so than Orlin IMO) in how he seemed to see Sam as almost a replacement girlfriend. She had the memories of Jolinar and looked similar to Rosha. That's just fetishizing at it's worst. I mean where is Sam Carter in that equation?

Timothy Nikiforovs

This episode is a big blow to Earth. The Tollan may not be the Asgard, but they were still allies who were gradually showing more and more respect for Earth and a prime example of humans surpassing the goa'uld in technology. Technology of their own creation at that. I mean they built their own stargate. I don't even feel that bitter about them trying to send a bomb to Earth, as it was motivated by fear(it was still wrong, but I understand it). The Tollan had long been able to hide behind their tech, secure in their superiority. They haven't had to fight or struggle for survival in as long as they can remember. SG1 is used to going up against overwhelming odds. For the Tollan to suddenly go from being able to pluck fleets of goa'uld ships out of the sky to being helpless, it must be absolutely terrifying. Also the tollan in general and Narim in particular always struck me as fundamentally decent people. I'd like to think that some colony of Tollans still exists of some survivors of Tollana managed to hide from the goa'uld bombardment and that their civilization isn't dead, but it doesn't look good. It also raises the question of how the goa'uld could jump in tech that fast. To go from being defenseless against ion cannons to shrugging them off. Of course Tanith found some new master's boots to lick, you'd expect nothing less, and whoever that is they clearly have some game changing cards to play. And I love Daniel's little reactions in this one. Like when Jack said "you knew him, what's strange?" and he gives that little "good point" look, or the little "huh" one he does after O'Neill said he's both happy and sad about Omac's death. Also his very acted out "how much do you need". Not to mention that head drop when Tanith showed up. Shanks is great at bringing these little nuances to his character in scenes where he could just stand there.

I guess in hindsight it's hard to answer this question without spoilers, so nevermind :p

Why would they check her stomach Failwhale 😭🤣😂

To those that are missing the Tollan or thought they were done dirty, a question I just pondered, do you think the writers felt that the Tollan were too powerful of an ally for SG1 to have, and would be hard for them to explain their presence in light of this new player? that they could be at threat to it? that it would be hard to justify this new player if the Tollan are out there being this advanced? or the fact they would be too much of a Deus Ex Machina for Earth in the future? in other words, maybe they were a little too advanced for things to come? So they decided to basically remove the Tollan from the storyline due to that?

Brent Justice

This one of the reasons I love season 5 so much. Because the s**t gets real and it introduces my favourite villain of SG1

Daniel Grafton

I was so waiting for a 'Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi' joke when I saw the hologram at the beginning.

Chris

The loss of the Tollans is one of those things I'm still salty about to this day, but I guess it drives home the seriousness of this new threat. It's a great episode otherwise, and quite emotionally effective. I really felt for the Tollans, they'd been through so much only to be destroyed. I guess in the end it was better for them to go out than be responsible for the destruction of other civilizations, given their history. I'll miss Narrim. He was still one of Sam's least creepy love interests.

Teth

Owe nice! There was something so very unpleasant about his passionate and blindsiding vendetta. Quite fitting that he made an apt Inspector Javert comparison.

Daryl

What you said really reminds me of a quote from the DS9 ep The Maquis "On Earth there is no poverty, no crime, no war. You look out the window of Starfleet headquarters and you see paradise. Well, it's easy to be a saint in paradise, but the Maquis do not live in paradise. Out there in the Demilitarised zone, all the problems haven't been solved yet. Out there, there are no saints, just people. Angry, scared, determined people who are going to do whatever it takes to survive whether it meets with Federation approval or not."

Timothy Nikiforovs

Always felt bad for them, if for no other reason than we lose one of our more powerful/advanced allies. I mean sure their ion cannons weren't cutting it anymore but given time I'm sure they'd develop something more effective(hell, those phasing bombs would probably do the trick if you strapped an engine to them). Other than that though they were gradually becoming less arrogant. Granted they did try to do Earth dirty, but that was an action taken out of fear but their leaders.

Timothy Nikiforovs

"Your over confidence is your weakness...." "Your faith in your friends is yours!" It's a shame how some people's principles are something they just expect others to live with as they peer at you over their impregnable bunker. Their own humanity can quiet often be revealed when that is taken away. "This Guy!" I loved that moment. 🤣 As Jack would say "Easy big fella."

Daryl

Maybe don't post blatant spoilers in the comments?

Ugly Pig

Tanith is wonderful <3

brad hawkes

So clarification, it's not a new Goa'uld ship, just better shields. And there's a new player, at play. Interesting. Well, bye bye Tollans, nice knowin ya.

Brent Justice

bro, GG to the tollans!
