Definitely better for me than people are suggesting.

Yeah, not my favorite ep. One thing is clear though: it establishes ASCENDED BEINGS as being a whole society. Anyway, on to the next one!

Ricardo Pomalaza

Eugh! This is one of the few episodes I skip on reruns and it was even creeper than I remembered. The guy made my skin crawl.

Overall, I never really liked this episode. Not that I dislike it, it just wasn't one of my top episodes. I like some of the connections that are made in it for future, but I think it could have been done better. However, this episode made one thing happen: I've coveted Carter's house from the first watch. I love the outside and the design and layout. Just mix in a back porch and yard like Jack has and maybe even his lake front view from the cabin, and it would be perfect!!!

And also was the FBI .. director? or something in Miracle day

I think with the Tollan is wasn't so surprising that they could figure out how the gates work and build one of their own, given the tech they already have. What's so surprising with Orlin's gate is that he built it with probably a few thousand dollars worth of stuff off ebay

Timothy Nikiforovs

Ah yes, I forgot to mention Simmons, him being new and all as Timothy posted. The actor is played by John de Lancie who plays Q on Star Trek TNG, so when I first watched SG1 and saw him pop up here I was delighted.

This is definitely one of the more "meh" episodes of the season, especially once you see some of the bangers coming up, but it's also rather important in it's implications. Back in Maternal Instinct, Oma Desala almost seemed like some sort of unique being, or one of a few at best, but here we find out these "ascended beings" exist in numbers large enough to have a society with rules on another plane of existence. I think a lot of people are too harsh on Orlin. I found him less creepy and more extremely awkward, which given he spend centuries alone on a dead planet, it's hard to blame him. As to why Carter was willing to trust him, I think it boils down to the fact that they did that "sharing of souls" thing, and aside from that after he became human again, she probably just figured she could kick his ass if he tried anything untoward. Clearly he didn't. Also while he did steal from her by using her CC without asking, let's be real, she could pay it all back and still come away filthy rich if she sold that honking huge emerald. Also you just know she and a bunch of other scientists are gonna want to tear into that mini gate and figure out how it worked, especially since they're going to know the exact materials he used. Could be a bridge to understanding how the actual gates function. Simmons is a new face. I guess they figured with Maybourne out of the game since working with the russians, they needed a new punchable government type to harass the heroes. And aside from that Maybourne was getting to a point where you didn't hate the guy. Also I love any scene where Hammond knocks guys like him down a peg or 2. Reynolds OTOH we actually have seen before, though you'd be forgiven for not remembering, since it was all the way back in S2's Touchstone that he first appeared. Guess he moved up to the big leagues. And this ep is where Teal'c's love of Star Wars is established. I love how excited he is about it even though he's seen it nine times. Teal'c's slow, strange integration into human society is one of the more fun little background stories in the series. Speaking of Teal'c, I love his tone of voice when he said "it is a weapon of great power, O'Neill". He's like a dad patting his kid on the back for getting the simplest thing right.

Timothy Nikiforovs

Agreed. Being a creep tends to come with harmful intent. Orlin was harmless, he was just extremely awkward, and who wouldn't be after centuries alone on a ruined planet.

Timothy Nikiforovs

I think the world building elements is the thing that helps elevate this episode. They do revisit the dangers of sudden advancements in technology again. The first example would be when dealing with the Tollan. Who later went on to built their own stargate, so that's not that new either. They had also been responsible for interfering in another culture's development. Absolute Power touched on this idea recently as well. More of a bread crumb episode.

Daryl

I always liked this episode. And I like Orlin. For those saying he's "creepy", a couple of things to keep in mind: 1. He's an alien. Originally from a human or human-like society, yes, but we have no idea what the social norms were like where he was from. 2. He's been ascended for hundreds if not thousands of years or even longer for all we know. By now, he'd certainly be used to interacting with others in whatever way pure energy beings interact, which seems to be a whole lot more intimate than regular human interaction. and 3. He's been completely alone for hundreds of years. I think he can be forgiven for coming across as a little needy.

Ugly Pig

To be fair on that last point, is sci-fi really that fun anymore if you go to alien planets regularly?

Flufux

Definitively Sam's creepiest love interest

Teth

This episode is important. Here are some things that we learned from this episode, just the facts. None of these things are spoilers, they are straight from this episode. This alien was similar to Oma Desala. They have the power to control nature. They were once humanoid, and can ascend to a higher plane of existence. They can revert back to humanoid, and then ascend again even with the help of the others. There are others. They have rules, don't interfere with the lower beings. They also have a rule to not speed up the ascension of others, but Oma Desala is basically skirting around that rule. This alien was also able to build a Stargate, though only to one address and then it would burn out. It has always been a fan favorite scene with Teal'c having watched Star Wars 9 times. Then Jack says he hasn't seen it, and "how he feels about SCIFI" which is tongue in cheek considering he's starring in a SCIFI show.

Brent Justice

I think that these are fair criticisms. Until you have a larger understanding of the overall universe of Stargate it can be difficult to understand just how many clues and important plot developments are in this episode.

James Yancy

Despite the importance of the episode to the overall plot/storyline, I still find this episode to be a "mehpisode" personally. Its a bit slow paced, and the teams willingness to dismiss Carters experiences despite everything they've been through doesnt feel fair or realistic. I also find Orlin wholly creepy and Carter liking him so much feels weird. Maybe if they had fleshed out the "mind meld" more to explain what kind of person Orlin is/was, it would have helped. Or at least expanded on the relationship they were forming over the weeks that passed. Because the episode does not do a good job of making it feel like any significant time has passed for Carter to warm up to Orlin. One of the slower episodes of the season for me, but season 5 is banger central regardless!

MisturSmith

...and the pieces are coming together. This episode carries far more weight than Failwhale realizes, and its echoes will reverberate throughout the rest of the franchise going forward.
