2021-03-17 03:10:27 +0000 UTCGreat episode and one I've been looking forward to as a follow-up to Teal'c's past since we saw Cor-ai back in s1. That speech Bra'tac gives him when he becomes first prime is so powerful.

2021-03-15 06:18:52 +0000 UTCFor some reason, before I watched this again, I thought this would be a clip-show showing past episodes with Teal'c as part of SG-1. I had forgotten it was a totally unique backstory for Teal'c with new footage. So I was glad to see that. I thought this was an episode I didn't like, but after the re-watch with you, I changed my mind, this is a very good episode indeed.

2021-03-15 00:05:01 +0000 UTCI've always admired Janet's passion in this one, and it's heartbreaking because, ultimately, Hammond's position has the better perspective on the situation if Teal'c manages to survive in that brainwashed version of himself. Then juxtapose this situation to just a few episodes ago in Entity where Jack wanted to do anything but let Sam go, and Janet had to reason, "She wouldn't have wanted to live like this, and you know it." I also think Jack wasn't convinced at the beginning of the episode, and had Bra'tac not been there, he would have tried to put his foot down that Teal'c wasn't ready to rejoin the team.

2021-03-14 23:19:54 +0000 UTCI forgot just how good this episode is and how good Christopher Judge is in it. Which is weird since this season is definitely one of my favorites.

2021-03-14 21:44:11 +0000 UTCFinally we get the details on Teal'c and his past that we've been missing. We know everyone else's stories before they got to sg1 but Teal'c has always been more of a mystery. You really echoed my feelings on this ep at the end. Also what's strange about this ep is that it has the format of a clip show, but everything except the scenes from the pilot are new scenes. It's extremely effective in showing how he came to make the decision he did back in the pilot. I think I mentioned it way back when, but if you haven't yet you should really watch the original cut of Children of the Gods. That scene where Teal'c turns on the serpent guards is so much more powerful. The directors cut did give a better pace to the actual firefight, and there were a half dozen other changes I thought were great improvements, but there were a plethora of unneeded and often bad changes as well. Check it out some time, maybe make it a throw back reaction. Chris Judge and Tony Amendola obviously carried the episode, but honestly everyone was used very effectively. Jack and Daniel covered the humor with their signature banter, from Daniel fixing his glasses and giving Jack that "don't jinx it" look, to the Valar/velour convo, and of course jack saying he thinks it's working because Teal'c called Daniel a woman. The both also were trying their best to reason Teal'c back to the light. I felt like Sha're and Skaara could have been effectively mentioned since Teal'c killed Amaunet and was instrumental in freeing Skaara. Hardly serving Apophis. Sam was probably used the least, but you can tell shes torn between compassion and knowing this has to be done. Janet is showing that fire that makes her such a great doctor, and shes not wrong to feel that way, but Hammonds scene shows why that just wasnt what was needed here. Hammond hates seeing Tealc suffer as much as anyone, but as much as it pains him, he would rather let him die there than be thrown into a cell to die alone or be experimented on. If the rite failed, letting him die would be the greater mercy. Bra'tac is a real stand out here though. I love that he can just look into Teal'c's eyes and know whether he is telling the truth or not. Also just the conviction he had to put Teal'c through that in order to save him, and when he grabbed his head and shouted "CHOOSE!!". Bra'tac was always said to be the one who made Teal'c question whether the goa'uld were gods, but this ep really shows the lengths he went to to make him understand. One of my favourite Bra'tac lines in the series is "I have done deeds for which I cannot forgive even myself, as will you. Men such as you or I have only the comfort of those times we make a difference. Make a difference". With the shows you've been reacting to, the other day I got to thinking about some things characters from different shows share. I'm not talented enough by any means to make it, but I just had an idea for a piece or art/desktop wallpaper/poster highlighting Bra'tac, Giles, and uncle Iroh along with the words "when the father you need isn't the one you were born to" or something like that. All 3 characters really stepped up to be mentors and father figures to characters who had no one else to turn to. Anyway, fantastic episode to kick off a fantastic season. Edit - finally got home and separated that word soup into paragraphs. Cant figure out how on my phone

2021-03-14 21:21:35 +0000 UTCOne thing I love about SG-1 is when the actors need to bring it they can bring it. This is just a fantastic episode all around giving you a real insight to the man Teal'c truly is.
2021-03-14 20:05:56 +0000 UTCI loved this episode so much because we see so much emotion from Christopher Judge, he doesn't get to be this....extra, very often, I love it

2021-03-14 18:39:06 +0000 UTCBrilliant episode, I don't think I properly appreciated how great it was in previous watch thrus of the series, especially those little moments with Hammond. He really is the grandpa of the SG1 team. Also Chris Judge knocked it out of the park.
