City of Walls and Secrets is the episode that turned me from a casual viewer into a lifelong fan. The dark and complex story, one of those "this is not a kids show" moments.

Thought Joo Dee sounded familiar. Same voice actress as Amy Wong from Futurama. And so many little nuggets in Tales of Ba Sing Se. I live how violently Sokka was ejected for going 1 syllable over. Both Iroh and Zuko had rather touching stories. Did not expect Momo of all characters to be the MVP finding a lead on Appa.

Yeah the rewatchability of this show is definitely extremely high compared to many others. You almost have to watch the whole thing twice to get the whole story and there's always new stuff to notice every time you come back.

Iroh's bit in Tales of Ba Sing Se impacts me more the more often I see it. I can't get through the end without tearing up. Mako was in a lot of great shows and voiced a lot of great characters, including Aku from Samurai Jack. It's sad to think he didn't get to finish his run as Iroh, but he had a great impact as Iroh (and many others). I also tend to favor the Zuko and Iroh stories. I think Avatar was very clever in that there are multiple running stories and each story has a different target demographic. The Hero's journey side of things (Aang) is more targeted at the younger audience, while Zuko's seem to be more targeted at older teens/young adults and Iroh is targeted more at adults, meaning the show resonates differently each time you return to it and sort of bridges a generational gap. Of the two, I favor Tales of Ba Sing Se, but I do like the daring tone of Walls and Secrets, which encourages viewers to question authority, society, and the media. In general, Avatar just has a lot of really great life lessons and I appreciate the fact that it wants its audience to think about things, ask questions, and not rush to judgment.

Loved both these episodes - just goes further to cement Uncle Iroh as one of my favourite characters - it's really interesting when you go back and watch the 1st few episodes now knowing more of their motivations and backstory.

In case you aren't aware, Mako was Iroh's voice actor. Legend. That ep is always a heartbreaker for me.
