I agree on the first ep mostly having value as setup, not only because of Appa being captured, but also with this knowledge of an upcoming solar eclipse that will apparently rob fire benders of their powers for the duration like we saw with the water benders a while back. The giant owl was was an interesting character as well. Also anyone who played the Mass Effect games might recognize the voice actor for the professor as being the same guy who voiced Kaidan Alenko. One thing I liked was Sokka stepping up and realizing they couldn't leave behind information as important as the next solar eclipse, and knowing enough to narrow down the dates they need to check. He's not as dumb as he appears. Also I thought the tusken raider looking guys were air benders at first, but I guess they just throw sand into the sails or something. Also would a boat that sails over sand even last long? Wouldn't it be like rubbing the entire keel with sandpaper constantly? Aang really started embracing the dark side a little bit in The Desert. Even after he got Momo back he still had to take out that hornet vulture thing. Katara also showed some real leadership here, which is a good thing since Aang's state of mind was way too volatile and Sokka was tripping on cactus juice. Also it seems clear the groups path is going to cross with Zuko and Iroh again pretty soon.

Appa was one of Aang's last connections to his former life. Losing him was a soul crushing blow. As we get older we all start losing connections to our youth, and when we lose major elements of that lost innocence the pain is nearly unbearable. Those moments, even in fiction resonate strongly with me. Not gonna lie, it gets me a little choked up. Life really sucks sometimes.

We need more people like Iroh in our world - He's just so patient and polite, no matter if it's a stranger or someone out to kill him - plus when push comes to shove he can really throw it down.

That librarian was frigging terrifying. I've always liked the library episode just for how creepy it was. And remember the episode in season1 when Iroh lost his lotus tile and was real focused on getting it back?
