They took this episode way over the top, but I don't think it would have worked at all otherwise. Love Angel in that stupid hat. I agree that it's kind of a mixed bag, but still fun.

2021-02-06 22:44:54 +0000 UTCI actually love this episode... not because it's great by any means, but because of the potential it represents for the show and the Angel character. IMO this is the first episode to show that Angel the show can be funny like Buffy is. We all remember the big moments in Buffy, the drama, the sadness, ect... but the show is a comedy more than half the time, and I think sometimes we (the fans) underrate how important it is to the success of the show. Even is serious episodes, usually the majority of the lines have some semblance of wittiness or comedic banter that makes the down time more entertaining. I don't find the first 5 episodes of Angel to be very funny. Spike is funny when he shows up, but he's just a Buffy character appearance. This episode shows that Angel has the same ability to flex its comedic chops. It's silly, and downright stupid sometimes, but it also opens a new door for the show. I mean... "Herb Saunders, Baltimore" is just something we can only get on this show. His character on Buffy never had this range. It's good to see the character, and the show, flesh itself out a bit. Could the episode have been executed better at times? Absolutely... but it's still the funniest episode of the show so far, and I think comedy in the Buffyverse (really any whedon property) is a critical element to its success.
