I think both this and the Buffy ep make it fairly clear that the ring only offers the invulnerability buff to vampires, which explains why the mayor didn't go looking for it. Also clearly Angel cant keep it, it would just be hard to create any credible threat if the MC is invincible. Still, the explanation was pretty solid. Still, you'd figure he would keep it around for a rainy day. Spike mocking Angel at the beginning was comedy gold. they did an awesome job synching him up with what was going on down on the ground too. I'm actually starting to feel bad for the guy at this point. He just can't catch a break.

2021-01-14 01:12:59 +0000 UTCOz wasn’t surprised to see Cordelia, and he heard a rumor that she and Angel are detectives. It’s implied Angel and Buffy haven’t been in touch since he left Sunnydale. So where did Oz hear these rumors? My theory is Angel phoned Giles with his contact information in case they ever need his help or if something happens to Buffy; and Giles told Willow who told Buffy and Oz.

They're still in the "explain who people are" phase of the show for any viewers who weren't familiar with Buffy (though I can't imagine there were that many but they were trying to keep the option open for brining in new viewers). But I feel like this is when the show is starting to find its tone and character relationships. Obviously, there's a lot more to come as the show establishes its own identity within the Buffyverse. Hope you enjoy the ride!
