I'm Extremely late but I found this episode underwhelming after a strong 12th series. I'd been expecting more considering Jack's return and the Timeless Child reveal. The storyline was unoriginal and the companions' goodbyes weren't emotional. Next series, I hope they'll develop on the implications behind the Timeless Child reveal but also on Yaz's growing recklessness. A bit worried she'll have a dramatic exit though, as I don't think she'd decide to leave the Doctor, especially considering all the hints at her having romantic feelings for 13. The thing about this era is that it really reminds me of Classic Who and that's not necesseraly a compliment. Lore being thrown around, a Doctor who's less God-like, disconnected episodes, lots of companions... It's a formula that works for me but might not work for everyone. I feel like this series found an equilibrium between Classic and New Who, but I fully understand some might not enjoy it. Personally, I lived my best life watching series 12. Anyway, can't wait for the next series! Too bad covid-19 will lead to even less episodes. Jodie's done 22 episodes in 4 years while David did 47 episodes in 3 years.

This was definitely one of the better ones from this era, still not rising to the level of great tho. Not a fan of having the Trump parody back. It felt like maybe a mistake to bring back a villian from one of the lesser recieved episodes. He aligns with perhaps a potential authoritarian UK Prime Minister. But to hit that nail on the head like Chibs likes to do... He tries selling out humanity to the space Nazis. I'm not sure if I'm reading too much into the scene when The Doctor and Ryan have chat about change and how its hard to except. I felt like that was perhaps an address to the audience who might have not embraced all of this this era. Speaking for myself, it's not the actual change but the substance. But there was stuff to enjoy here as well. Having Jack feature again. Some better chemistry between The Doctor and her fam. It's a shame that it is when two are departing. The alien callbacks in the prison. Hoping for a much tighter S13.

Daryl

Thanks for pointing that out! I completely missed that when I watched it!

It's interesting to note that the Sonic Screwdriver didn't feature in this episode. Maybe the Judoon took it off her? There are a few explanations as to why the Tardis could have taken 4 minutes to get there. One of them being that the Tardis saw that she needed time to think and talk to Ryan, and so stalled the journey.

Tandem Yeti

There's still a third TARDIS disguised as a tree. Wonder if they'll bring that up at any point?

Mr K

I get that they had to wrap up loose ends with the second TARDIS, but it really didn't sit well with me that they murdered it. Like we know that TARDIS's are living things, also sentient, we have even seen the Doctors TARDIS take on a body in the Doctors Wife - So feel a bit uncomfortable that she just bodies this one.

I'm glad you enjoyed this episode so much. I definitely had a couple points which I didn't love (e.g. the drop of the prison story, the Grace ghost bit at the end felt unnecessary, etc.), but had far more I did. One of the things which I wonder if you know is that Chris Chibnall the showrunner was heavily involved in Torchwood s1 and s2, which sort of explains why he's leaning more into having Jack and namedropping Gwen. The other thing was that there was a post-credits stinger (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHSob62p17Q&ab_channel=BBC). Personally I'm a big fan of Jodie's Doctor, but less so of the stories she's been given. I can't help but wonder what she'd be like under a different showrunner, I think Chibnall just hasn't done that great a job (but there are definitely eps in the last couple seasons I've really enjoyed). I am looking forward to season 13, I wonder how Covid has given them a chance to make their shorter season (8 episodes I believe) really work well....can't wait for the reactions to that!

Mack Place

Aww I'm sad that you didn't pickup on the Harry Potter reference. The story she starts to read to herself is the opening line from the Philosopher Stone book. That made my day on the first watch having that reference! But good to have Who back.

Jake Foad

I dont know why but I was expecting more from the prison thread. I guess having to resolve it quick due to needing to get her back into the story since it was a one off. I kjnow some people didnt like how the judoon simply teleported into the tardis "how could they it has shields" but they shields have been down before so i explained it away due to that.... but here the doctor broke out of jail...... they knew who broke out and where she would go they could have just teleported back in and grabbed her again. also found Jacks lines a bit weird, and forced mentioning he is immortal because for new viewers they might need to know how he came back to life later in the episode when he dies.... oh that didnt happen though..
