The first season was a lot like the UK show and the big joke was that Ricky Gervais's character was absolutely irredeemable. So Mike in the first season is pretty much irredeemable. He's the boss you can't stand. When they adapted it, that sort of character didn't go over so well in America so they decided to workshop him a little. I think the first few episodes of the second season really make Michael a more complex and well-rounded character. His main problem is that he's very ignorant, almost child-like. Like a little kid, he judges stuff at face value. He's fearful of new things and change. And he always wants attention. From an outside perspective, he's annoying, rude, inappropriate, and kind of cowardly, but when you see him from a more intimate perspective (especially in situations outside the office) you realize he's kind of just a really sad lonely guy. He's awkward. Sometimes, he's genuinely funny, but he's so desperate to be funny ALL the time, he becomes annoying to everyone around him. From Jim's side of things, I don't blame him for not inviting Michael at all. Firstly, because he's the boss and it's kind of weird to have a boss at a party outside of work. Conflict of interests or whatever you want to call it. Plus, the guests aren't free to behave how they want to. Lastly, because of all the aforementioned reasons about how Mike's perceived by the other characters. However, on that note, I do love that it's Jim who ends up singing karaoke with him. Love you reaction!

Muhahaha loved your reaction to the ending! I'm glad you're getting to see the softer side of Michael and what makes him endearing. Yes, he's horribly flawed, but he also has some qualities that make you like him. Love Phyllis singing karaoke; always makes me laugh.

I think we are meant to feel sorry for Michael Scott here. He is annoying and a massive attention seeker. He just yearns to be liked. He's just the one of the most deluded guys in the room and often a complete jerk with some pretty tastless ideas and infantile behaviours. But he's not the only only either. I think both Pam and Jim are jerks sometimes too. They don't just retaliate against Dwight, but sometimes go out of their way to antagonise him. It's one of the things that they bond over, but by doing so they come off as bullies as well. This make for some complex characters and gives the writers lots of places to go.
