It's a fun episode, but I feel like it kind of cheated just to shock the viewers. Like, what are the odds that the one soul-extracting demon contacted by the mayor is indebted to Giles? Why didn't they let the rest of the gang in on the plan? And wtf, SO much could have gone wrong with it. It was way to elaborate for them to only find out the exact date of the mayor's ascension . It just doesn't make sense. It's well acted and well executed, but in my opinion, poorly written.

Granted if you understand narrative and how shows are written, you just know they wouldn't rehash an already thoroughly explored storyline. Still, when I first saw this episode, it definitely had me fooled.

Your reaction to, first, Angel turning, and then it turning out to be an act was fabulous. *knee slap.* I knew you'd like it, but wow. And now you know why this show is so beloved 20 years later. Also, I really like the magic priest guy. I just thought he was a really interesting character with a cool design, and the spell, fake as it is, was awesome. Always gives me chills. Everyone's acting in this one was fantastic. And OMG, David Boreanez in this episode, his acting was just incredible. I think Passion in season 2 was the episode where they realized he was capable of carrying his own show, but if there was any doubts as they were developing Angel's series, this episode probably slaughtered them.
