I like this episode a lot, but I think it's one of those where it gets funnier the more times you see it. My favorite joke in this one is when Xander sees Angel and calls out to him like they're best friends or something, even though he HATES Angel. He's just so desperate to get away from that girl without being rude that he's even excited to see Angel.

Somehow the episodes you mentioned are my favorites in the whole season. I appreciate the drama but it's the wonky bits where Buffy really gets to shine - because it's still canon, magic and the hellmouth tend to do weird stuff. But it's different and yes, it's bold. And it usually has an impact on what is going to happen. The band candy episode wasn't simply overlooked if you look at the way Giles and Mrs Summers treat each other now. The band candy and this one are definitely two of my favorites - especially because this isn't something you usually get to see: a high-stakes season finale-type episode which you hardly get to see at all. I think once you have seen all of it you might get to appreciate these type of breather episodes more (I know I do)

Another thing to add on to what others have said, this is something that Joss does. He drops you into the middle of a situation, a story line, a moment, and he doesn't give you a heads up, he doesn't explain anything. He lets you go along for the ride and figure it out on your own. That's something I've always appreciated. :)

Katherine Thoreson

gotta respect when the writers of a show can take a step back and make fun of their own failings/clichés.

Timothy Nikiforovs

I love how you got it is super meta/parody of itself, especially in that super dramatic scene with Buffy and Angel!

Phoenix Dawn

I will say this. I felt the exact same way as you the first time I saw it. Watching again, knowing from the beginning what is going on, it's significantly more interesting.

So see, at the end where they say no one will know what we did to save the world, well.... that's exactly what Xander did! He saved them, and the world, by stopping the bomb, and they will never know! It's a parallel. So basically this whole episode switches the A/B plot. Instead of Buffy being the A plot, Xander is the A plot and Buffy and gang are the B plot, it's a switcharoo. And Xander ends up saving everyone at the end, and they never knew it. So he may be "on the outside" but in reality, he isn't. He saves them in his own way. And yeah, the B plot is exaggerated to make it feel more dire and epic.

so strange watching this as an adult when your priorities have changed to just being happy and enjoying life with family & friends. being popular and cool was such a big deal as a teenager.

Believe it or not, but this is not even the weirdest episode of the show.

Love this episode. I believe the title comes from Zeppo Marx of the the Marx Brothers. Back in the day, a lot of people thought that Zeppo was the most boring, least useful of the Marx Brothers (esp next to Harpo and Groucho). Anyway, love the premise of the episode, seeing things from Xander's perspective. I think I heard in an interview that this episode inspired Russell T. Davies to write the "Love and Monsters" episode of Dr. Who. Also, this itself might have been inspired by by the play/movie "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead" a telling of the Hamlet play by two very minor characters. Anyway, it's great to see a Xander-centric episode. I've been noticing quite a bit of Xander hate from reactors and it's interesting to see them react to this episode (not saying you do - just something I noticed). Xander's arc here is pretty great.

Daywalker

I love this show so much and thus is undoubtedly one of my favorite episodes since xander is one of my favorite characters and i feel like this episode really solidly shows who he is

Quentin

Been waiting for this one, Gonna go out on a limb and guess you didn't like it, these eps never seem to be your thing.

Great reaction, I love seeing that click when someone realizes oh, this is a meta parody. Reality is also skewed heavily towards Xander's perspective, so the way the characters behave and even dress reflects how Xander views them, not how they actually are. It's a weird form of canon. People love to point out that there are way too many beeps on the bomb clock as if they're catching an editing mistake, even though that's absolutely part of the joke.

KT

I also love this episode. So entertaining. I love the parody of the melodrama between Buffy and Angel. I believe it’s one that gets better each time you watch the show.

Ashley

I love this episode to death. I love the show having the confidence to both mess with and make fun of it’s tropes (apocalypse, Bangel being angsty af) and formula. The events of the episode are canon (but Xander is a potentially unreliable narrator). I think it plays best on rewatches when you can appreciate the ride from the beginning .

Flora Smith

🤠 saddle up. What'd you think of this one?
