made sense that this would be a Christmas ep given it aired 10 days before Christmas of 98. And regarding christmas trees, I am partial to real ones. It's actually more environmentally friendly to do so. Trees are excellent for carbon capture as wood is about 50% carbon by weight and pretty much all christmas trees come from tree farms. The more people buy them, the more they get planted, the more carbon they take out of the air. And after people are done with them they get ground up, sprayed with some kind of bacterial solution that breaks them down, and turned into compost for gardening. This first evil seems like a big lore development. Seems like it could be pulling a lot of strings on the other side of the hellmouth. Xander thankfully seems to be maturing just a bit in this episode. It's high time he learned to not be such an ass. I also liked that Faith found a little more acceptance for a change. Good on Joyce for inviting her.

Angel was a dollar store Romeo to Buffy's Juliet while they were together. Him turning into Angelus was a breath of fresh air just because it made him a lot more entertaining. The character only really came into his own after he moved on from Buffy IMO.

2020-10-08 18:27:19 +0000 UTCAs a Buffy/Angel shipper, I do love this episode… I’ve seen it so many times that I can recite all of the dialogue, including the entirety of the Buffy/Angel speech at the end. I was also 16 when I first watched this and in a bad place emotionally (suffering with depression and social anxiety)… and watching Buffy (and anticipating what was going happen between Buffy and Angel) was pretty much the only thing that got me through that period of my life, so I was extra emotionally invested in it. If it wasn’t for season 3 of Buffy, I might not be here today, so it will always hold a special place in my heart. Personally, I don’t buy that The First brought Angel back… I don’t know about anyone else, but I’ve always believed it was his love/bond with Buffy that brought him back. In 3x03, there’s a really big deal made of Buffy’s claddagh ring… first she dreams of the ring falling to the floor while she is dancing with Angel, and he picks it up and tells her to ‘go to hell’, then Scott gives her one and she drops it, and we see the same sequence of it falling to the floor… and then at the end of the episode, Buffy finally says goodbye and places it on the floor of the mansion… and then the ring lights up and Angel falls from the sky. Had to laugh at your comment about material for the R’n’B clips… I’ve always thought of that scene as serious and emotional, but your comments during it were awesome :P. In regards to Christmas Trees, we always had a real tree growing up, and my parents have continued to get a real tree every year since (except for last year when my dad broke his hip and it was too much of a hassle to get a real one). On the other hand, while I love real trees, I have a fake one in my house, because I’m usually too busy to get and maintain a real one.

2020-10-08 12:46:05 +0000 UTCThis ep is a weird one. There are a bunch of great scenes (the one between Giles and Angel is particularly stunning) and I mostly love it until the end and then it’s just...a bridge too far for me. This is no doubt heavily influenced by my status as a Bangel non-shipper, but the scene at the end really illustrates (to me) that it’s fundamentally toxic and as a viewer at this point I find it tedious.

2020-10-08 00:41:50 +0000 UTCInteresting, we meet something called The First, the First Evil they say here. It has bringers that work for it, with no eyes. Apparently, it seems that this evil is the first evil, it's everywhere. Interesting concept, I wonder if we'll see it again and how'd you even beat such a thing. To me, that's the most important thing we got out of this episode, quite a bit of lore building.

2020-10-07 23:13:53 +0000 UTCSo I don’t get Christmas tree because I live alone, but at my parent’s we get a natural one because if you buy an artificial one it’s gotta stay with you for at least 25 years if you don’t wanna leave a bad environmental footprint I believe. But anyway, in regards to the episode. Rewatching it with you, I enjoyed it, like it’s was nice and all. But I really didn’t like it when it aired, idk, something rubbed be the wrong way with that episode. But still a great episode, my least favourite one is Teacher’s pet with the praying mantis (literary cannot stand this one haha)

2020-10-07 22:41:55 +0000 UTCI do think this episode is something that will grow on you with rewatches (if you're into rewatching shows). This is an episode that like you say is just OK but the more you watch and really dig deep into it the more you learn and appreciate it. It"s still not the best Joss episode though so totally agree with that comment.

2020-10-07 22:10:06 +0000 UTCI used to get real Christmas trees then moved into a house where the previous owners left us a fancy fake tree with lights, so we have used that for a few years. I did buy a really tacky mid-century modern gold metallic tree that rotates on a stand; I'm looking forward to using it this coming year. I agree with you on the episode. I really like this episode, but don't love it. It's our one Joss happy ending episode lol.
