this black hole powering the gate thing is going to be slightly important later

2020-09-28 07:46:15 +0000 UTCWhat I really admired about Amanda (Sam Carter) was that she really got into astrophysics herself and even started correcting some of the science that didn't make sense when going through the scripts, including changing formulas on the white boards on set. She got super comfortable with the terminology and got to a point in real life where she could explain things to others in a way that could be understood. Mad props.

2020-08-22 03:00:48 +0000 UTCthe good thing about not having seen sg1 in over a decade is I've forgotten a lot of episodes. Makes the rewatch better.

2020-08-13 23:24:06 +0000 UTCactually, with the star and gravity thing. From what we see the second star was already being sucked in before the black hole formed. you can see the link between and after the explosion we saw the black hole came to be. So its possible that the binary star system was collapsing and the orbit of the second star brought it closer and closer to the first star, this would throw off the orbit of everything as suddenly the second star starts accelerating to the first star, collapsing into a black hole as it sucks in the first one, with orbits in the solar system messing up it then shoots off towards the planet in the solar system with the solar system destabilised.

2020-08-13 08:31:46 +0000 UTCDamn, I caught up with your SG reactions and waiting for this next one was excruciating. Great reaction though. Also, I was sure the team stuck on that planet will get rescued, but I guess not.

2020-08-13 08:06:45 +0000 UTCDid the wormhole cut off so fast originally because of a failsafe on the other side?

2020-08-13 05:07:54 +0000 UTCTime dilation has been explored on a number of shows but I can't think of anywhere that had a more interesting take on it than here. This is probably the biggest example of why Earth NEEDS an offworld base on some deserted planet as a rally point rather than reporting straight back to Earth. This was FAR too close for comfort. Props to Carter though, she straight up saved the planet here. Hope she gets some recognition for her big brain ideas at some point. One thing that bugs me from a scientific standpoint though is that the star collapses into a black hole at the start of the episode and suddenly starts sucking everything in. A lot of scifi does this, but it's unrealistic. The black hole has the same mass(and gravity) as the star, just more condensed, but you'll only notice the difference up close. If our sun were collapsed into a black hole, the planets wouldn't get pulled in, they'd just freeze without light and heat, but otherwise orbit as usual. Still, I get it's written for TV drama, not total accuracy. Also, I like major Davis. It's nice to see them dealing with someone from outside the SGC who doesn't seem to be a snake like Maybourne or Samuels for a change. I actually remember reading a while back that a couple of novels were written as a sequel to this episode where they manage to rescue the team years later. Don't know how though, and they aren't canon AFAIK. Still it's interesting(or morbid I guess) to think that those guys will spend years or decades(centuries?) from our perspective waiting to die. And if I'm not mistaken this is the first of many times Sgt. Siler is injured in an episode. It became a running gag since the man who plays Siler, Dan Shea, is the stunt coordinator for the show. He's kind of like the Chief O'Brien of SG1 in that regard. Another running gag is that in the episodes directed by Martin Wood, he (playing a character named after himself) and Siler will be in the background of one shot or another in the episode with a comically oversized wrench doing....something. Also I was doing my pre trip inspection at work today and I realized that the fleet number of the truck I drive (13PX31) is straight up a stargate address.

2020-08-13 01:25:49 +0000 UTCAnother great episode of this season. Probably my favourite moment is when Sam is challenged by Jack after she is seen to be putting her instinctive scientific curiosity ahead of her ethics. She doesn't say sorry as she might normally. But you can see in her face that she is disappointed in herself. I love it when the show excels at these moments. Another being the contentious exchange between Jack and Cromwell relating to their history that you highlighted.

2020-08-12 20:05:06 +0000 UTCDamn. I'm caught up. I love this series. It and the spinoffs are some of my all-time favorite shows.

2020-08-12 18:56:19 +0000 UTCPossibly one of the times they were screwed over by their gate not having all the security failsafes because they cobbled together their own DHD? After all the gate shut itself off when the team on the planet tried to dial out. I also love Teal'c showing Sam some moral support while she's working. Their relationship is often overlooked but it's quite sweet.
