In fact, cell phones existed in the 80's (the big brick phones, my mom had one), and became much more compact and popular in the 90's and by this time period, late 90's, a lot of people had cell phones. I myself purchased my own cell phone right around this time and I was 20 years old, but this is when I got my first one, around 1999/2000, and they certainly existed for years before that, I just was late to the party cause I didn't have a need for it till I got older. I even ditched the land line and went cell phone only in 2000. And that time period is when Season 3 of Buffy took place. Cell phones were very prevalent. It's just that most teenagers or preteens didn't have them, it was more of a young adult, college-age and up thing, most people in high school didn't have them yet since phones and plans were expensive. Most households would only have 1 or 2 cell phones owned by the parents, for example, not everyone in the household would have one. However, they were becoming popular around this time and more and more people were getting them at this time. This show is also slightly behind in its use of technology, it isn't always showing what is up to date at the time. If you ever watched the X-Files, a popular mid 90's show, they used cell phones a lot in that show. So like I said, they weren't always using the most up to date technology in the show for Buffy. It just isn't that kind of show to need it. Also, Cordy and Xander still could have called each other with landline phones, it's not like those didn't exist, heh. So it's a little weird they didn't talk at all during the summer, there would have been times Cordy coulda called him and left a message or something. Answering machines and voicemail were also popular at this time. So the whole issue is really both of them, just not contacting each other, if they really wanted to, there was a way. Also, I would think Cordy's parents being rich and all business-like would have a cell phone anyway that she could have used.

2020-08-08 14:06:15 +0000 UTCThis episode gets me reeled in from the first scene at the school. There’s a long scene with no cuts focusing on Willow and Oz and it’s so loud and dynamic. Then cut to Buffy. Alone. In her new place. It shows such a contrast and I’m hooked!! Love this one and excited for the season!!

2020-08-08 13:41:08 +0000 UTCRe: Cordy and Xander, Cordy was on vacation with her parents for the whole summer and this was before the time of cell phones so they would have had no way of contacting one another. that would explain why they weren't sure of where they stood as far as their relationship. p.s.
