This is one of those iconic Buffy episodes… those last few minutes really turn it from an okay episode to an incredible one. It’s one of my favourites (despite my major snake phobia… I just have to look away for those scenes) and it’s just so emotional - completely tugs on the heartstrings with the parallel between James/Grace and Buffy/Angel. Buffy can identify with James because she blames herself for turning Angel evil - she feels like her actions were selfish and she feels guilty because she gave into her passion without considering the consequences (not that she knew what those consequences would be). And like James, what she needed was forgiveness from Angel for what she did. I love the moment when the spirits find peace and ‘pass on’, yet Buffy and Angel are still kissing… they’re so caught up in each other and the emotions they’ve been feeling that they haven’t quite remembered that they hate each other yet.

2020-10-03 14:03:59 +0000 UTCThis episode is the one I believe is most linked to Joss's influence of Shakespeare. It's like... an art piece. The first time I saw it, I liked it, but now it's one of my favorites. In leans heavily on visual analogy and metaphor as a way to explain feelings. This whole story could've been told in a few sentences from Buffy explaining how she feels about her part in Angel losing his soul, but instead they made it into a 42 minute horror love story. I think it's one of the smartest episodes of the whole series.

2020-07-19 15:50:06 +0000 UTC"What is going on in this school?!" ....have you forgotten that Sunnydale sits on a Hellmouth? lol one thing I love about this episode is that you can see how much guilt Buffy still holds about what happened to Angel. in her eyes, she is still directly responsible for essentially "killing" Angel and bringing about the reign of Angelus. this is why she had a hard time forgiving James. how could she when she hasn't even forgiven herself for her sins? excellent reaction, as always!

2020-07-18 12:23:00 +0000 UTCFailey McWhaley, which is it? The Invisible People or the Slitheen? Make up your mind. Love the new decor, by the way, but where does Dooksi sleep now that the bed is gone?

2020-07-18 12:11:48 +0000 UTCThis.is.my.episode. It's one of my favorite, perhaps top 5, of all Buffy for me. I know it's not that way for everyone. I watched Buffy when it aired, and this particular episode aired the day before my 15th birthday. And back then there wasn't really anything like this show on tv, and that twist at the end where James and Grace switched places with Buffy and Angel just blew my teenage mind. This was also the moment when Joss Whedon really got a glimpse at what David Boreanaz could do as an actor and got his mind turning on what he could do with him. So yeah, this episode holds a special place in my heart. It will always be one of my favorite episodes of Buffy of all time.

2020-07-18 07:37:33 +0000 UTCI think I would have liked the ghost stuff if it was a little more tied into the Sadie Hawkins theme. Like, what do snakes have to do with the two ghosts? Seems a little random in terms of the haunting. I did like things like the teacher writing on the board because it related directly to the haunting itself. I guess the only good thing about the snakes was the little nod they gave to Snyder and the joke about him having to constantly make up excuses to the public about wtf is going on at this school. Like a student is dead ever week and he's just like "Hi! Yes! It was uh! Uh! Sewers! Yeah that's it" The vampire scenes in this one definitely stand out to me as some of the most enjoyable. Even though Spike's a monster, the way this episode is framed makes it pretty difficult not to root for him. I agree, great performances from SMG and Boreanaz and even though the story has elements of a one-off, it manages to tie in some great character development. I thought it was pretty clever how the scene with two ghosts quarreling took a whole new meaning once the two of them were in their respective roles.

2020-07-18 07:35:24 +0000 UTCI love this story. It’s one of my favorites from this season! Basically for all the reasons mentioned. SMG and David’s acting really gets the emotions across for me and I love how Buffy couldn’t empathize with ghost James until he chose to use her. It was also clever to use Angel as the teacher since he couldn’t die after being shot. All in all I give this one two thumbs up!
