The thing I like about this episode is how Xander Xander is. At his core he is a good supportive guy. He didn't take advantage of Buffy, or anyone actually. His intent was not to use a spell to seduce, but to show/share Cordy his pain. Yeah, that is bad, but a different kind of bad. He was trying to reach out. He is just so immature. He obviously hasn't had good male role models in his life. But he guy who's best friend is a girl and is not insecure his other best friend is a super powered girl. You never see anger or resentment. He proves continually he would put his own life in danger for his friends, but he still makes selfish, immature decisions. His action in this episode made sense to me from a character perspective. Like you said, he lashes out when dealing with rejection, but having flaws does make him more relatable.

2020-06-26 12:33:56 +0000 UTCHere's the thing about Buffy. It's a network show. It's a show designed to get people to tune in week after week, yes, but it's also a show designed to pick up new viewers who just happen to tune in. This is a mix of monster-of-the-week-goofinish and over-arching-plot-that-actually-matters. If someone knew nothing about Buffy the Vampire Slayer, they could still happen upon an episode like this and understand everything that was going on. If they happened on one of the more over-arching ones (say the season finales) they'd have no idea what was going on. The show rewards constant viewers with an overarching story while still providing a means to access midway through. This show understood it needed to catch viewers with a quirky, silly, camp, off-beat story and hold them with a dramatic over-arching plot. You see just enough of each character and relationship that if you happen to tune in next week, you'll have a basic grasp of what's going on. I I like this episode overall. It's not the best of Buffy, but one I always remember. I agree I might have preferred it from Cordy's perspective. But the theme here is the difference between love and obsession. And yeah, I totally believe Cordy is vain enough to look at Xander trying to cast a love spell as flattery. Buffy would never forgive him and neither would Willow. But Cordy? Absolutely. That's what so interesting about her as a character. That she would even bother with Xander after this sort of behavior. Who puts up with that sort of behavior? Someone who needs to be the center of another person's world. It's definitely unhealthy, but this sort of behavior happens. People overlook redflags.

2020-06-26 06:32:09 +0000 UTCYeah, the witch stuff is a total metaphor, as others have mentioned. The cousin seeming overly involved, there is definitely some brain washing going on in such families, but it's way more than that. Some families are communal, especially when they're trying to be controlling to the female members (Think certain Mormon groups, as a for instance) and the pressure can be immense on other females to pressure any female who might want to rebel. If they don't pile on, then they, too, will be punished by the family/group in tremendous ways, loss of support, loss of acceptance. Keeping them isolated and dependent makes them not have any real way out a lot of the time. It's a toxic, cultural thing that can invade entire families, and communities, and countries. I've seen it in families before. I've had friends with families like that. One girl her father was extremely controlling and allowed her younger brother to get away with anything and drive the family car, go out at night, etc, but she had to stay home, couldn't drive even though she was older, wasn't allowed to date or anything. It was a really disgusting situation. It happens a lot more than you'd think and yeah if you're dependent upon your family for emotional support, and/or financial support, and other kinds of support then even as an adult it can be extremely difficult to extract yourself from that kind of environment.

2020-06-26 01:36:31 +0000 UTCYea, this is the only critique he gave that I didn't really understand. She's been established as someone who has been heavily involved with witchcraft since she was young, so I don't think anyone else could have played this role.

2020-06-25 18:47:06 +0000 UTCThe one issue I've always had with watching Buffy weekly is that these random comedic episodes are stuck in between serious plot-heavy episodes... and when you have to wait a full week to see progress in the main plot, but dont get any, it can hurt the momentum... but I gotta say, you're gonna wanna try to get used to that, because it's definitely going to happen a lot. This is a straight-up comedy episode. We are def not meant to take it too seriously. I honestly find this episode to be hilarious... BUT It does bother me at this point that Xander is the one that did this very stupid thing, but we are supposed to sympathize with him. He was gross for a lot of this. Yet... still, I like the humor.

2020-06-25 18:44:39 +0000 UTCLove spells are a staple of folklore and fiction, but they don’t work well with modern sensibilities, considering that making someone desire you against their will is akin to rape. I think it can be especially jarring when love spells are put to comedic effect. Xander’s immaturity has by now been well-established. It’s made him very unlikable at times. Will he eventually learn from his mistakes and grow up, or is this a fixed feature of his character? Meanwhile, Cordelia becomes more likable with every episode. I don’t find Amy’s reappearance and magical prowess startling. I think that if she had been in an episode or two earlier, if we had learned then that she was a witch, if there had been foreshadowing, it would have given this light episode too much weight. One good thing came of Xander’s stupidity: it saved his life. Angelus was out to kill one of Buffy’s friends for Valentine’s Day. Xander would be dead now if Drusilla had not been affected by the love spell and intervened. Lastly, what about the way Angelus is cuckolding Spike? The impotent man in a wheelchair whose wife turns to a rugged, virile fellow for physical love is right out of the novel Lady Chatterley’s Lover.

2020-06-25 14:44:45 +0000 UTCI hope you feel better, FailWhale & your ear gets better soon. I really like this episode! Amy has taken after her mother and is now a powerful witch. I like Xander & Cordy together. It always makes me feel for Cordy when we see she is wearing the necklace. It's a nice, light-hearted episode. Sometimes those are needed to break up more heavy episodes, I think.

2020-06-25 10:53:37 +0000 UTCYeah, this is what bugs me - especially in Cordelia's case because she doesn't find out that he was only using the love spell on her so that he could dump her and hurt her. He got off way too easy in that regard.

2020-06-25 09:44:36 +0000 UTCI am not sure why you found Amy thing to be jarring. Her mum was a major league witch. She has access to her spells and such. I think, if it was going to be anyone, Amy was the best choice.

2020-06-25 08:33:47 +0000 UTCThis is a hard episode to rate. On one hand, we get to see that side of Xander that makes you wanna smack him ( but maybe not with an axe.) Xander is a complex character. He fights with his feelings on masculinity and have problems at home, but he has a good heart and shows a lot of bravery at times. That's not to say he didn't royaly screw up here. One of the problems I have with the episode is how easy it is for people to accept it and move on. I would have liked to actually see a scene where Willow or Cordelia give him hell for this, but instead Cordelia looks almost flattered that he would try to force her to fall in love with him. With that said, this episode is very important in regards to Cordelia and I feel like we needed this from her. She isn't just a stereotypical mean-girl. She has character, (is it possible to have much of that?) she is smart and strong in her own way. This is the point when I realized that Cordy might actually be on her way of becoming an important member of the scooby gang in her own rights.

2020-06-25 08:28:49 +0000 UTCI didn't mind this episode, I don't think it's one of those ones that you're meant to take too seriously.. by modern standards maybe it hasn't aged too well, not sure.

2020-06-25 08:04:15 +0000 UTCI actually really like this episode, the 2nd half in particular. It's super absurd, but funny in a lot of parts. Got a few real lol's. I kind of find the Xander/Cordy relationship endearing. You can also see how Xander wants everyone to think he's cool/like him, but once they do (even before it gets crazy) you can tell he doesn't like it. Sometimes being "the guy" isn't all it's cracked up to be. But this also isn't my first watch through the show, so I always have to try and look at it from a first time viewer perspective haha.
