I agree. It’s really odd considering the entire “woman power” vibe this show was meant to be, and really odd that Calendar dismissed it.

I forgot how nice it was watching the relationship between Giles and Buffy slowly ramping up to being more than just “me watch, you slay” he loves her like a daughter and it’s obvious it’s reciprocated. Giles is the father she never had and deserved

No. I would not have gotten away with calling prostitutes “whores” in school, in front of a (female) teacher, as a kid in the 90’s.

That is not bad. That was just reality. And not the bad part of reality even lol Most kids today would not survive the 90s.

I am sad to hear you say you didn’t care so much for Willow’s performance in that episode because she stood up and got everything together. I was happy to see her standing up to Cordy and Xander. Also: I watched that episode when I was about 12/13 years old and I haven’t watch it often ever since. And I think it’s because I still feel uncomfortable with the episode bc it scared me so much back in the days.

Elise Lanciault-Breton

I thought of that too!,

Some of the dialogue in this one was uncharacteristically bad, like a teenager in the late 90’s casually referring to hookers as “whores” in a school, in front of a teacher and no one saying anything about it

Did the puddle at the beginning remind anyone else of Bill's intro to Who? haha

These kinds of episodes made me fully fall in love with this show.

One thing Buffy has always been great at is relationships and character building - whether its Mother/Daughter, Watcher/Slayer, Friends, even Spike and Dru.

Love your reaction to this one. I agree with you about Buffy stepping up and I liked getting to see more into Giles’ character. I also have to give a shoutout to Willow in this one since she really did have to get Xander and Cordelia under control. Plus she’s the one who figured out how to stop the demon and without her and Angel Ms. Calendar might have died after all! Interested for you to see the future character developments!

Ethan's definitely top tier for a recurring character. He's a perfect example of the Affably Evil trope and I love it. I pretty much always like Giles-centric episodes, so this and the Halloween episode are two of my favorites from this season. I think the theme in this episode is also pretty great, especially since Giles has been a father figure to Buffy for most of the series, seeing her get to recognize that despite their obvious differences, they really have a lot in common. Giles isn't just some stuffed shirt perfectionist; he has flaws and has made mistakes just like everyone else. In fact, the reason he might sometimes be so stern is out of a fear that Buffy, Xander, Willow, or Cordelia could easily mess up just like he did. I think this show was very lucky to have Anthony Stewart-Head. All of the actors are good and they get better as the show goes along, but his performance has a high level of gravitas which I think works well in juxtaposition to the more zany and/or immature characters. In this case, it makes his gradual breakdown both jarring and heart-wrenching. The other Scoobies kind of didn't get a whole lot to do this episode, but one thing I really like about this season is the overall character development with regard to each person's place in the team. This episode, we see all the Scoobies stepping in for Giles and personally experiencing the stress he must constantly be under, which puts them pretty quickly at each other's throats. Willow has to play peacekeeper and take charge of the situation in the library while Buffy has to be a real leader and delegate tasks. Cordelia isn't unwillingly roped into the situation; she volunteers to help. This is far from being the darkest episode of BtVS, but it's definitely on that end of the spectrum.
