Your reaction to Rayleigh didn't disappoint. This might be my very favorite character reveal. Oda established a character who was supposedly an unbelievably strong ship coater to set an expectation, so your expectations are high. Rayleigh tells the giant he is the ship coater, and the viewer connects the dots, and then BOOM. IT'S REVEALED HE WAS THE FUCKING VICE CAPTAIN OF THE ROGER PIRATES. All of the viewer's expectations of the ship coater's identity did not even begin to approach the level of this man's infamy, and yet the viewer accepts it as the truth and it feels believable because it was established that he was unbelievably strong. Oda is a genius.
