This was certainly a big turning point episode. The combination of elements reminds me a bit of the original Tenchi Muyo Ryo-Oki series, which also mixed science fiction, modern earth, and magical elements. Preseas's twisted relationship with Fate has echoes of the same relationship Chris in Symphogear had with Fine... Actually, Symophogear has a lot of echoes of the earlier Nanoha, with Hibiki and Nanoho having similar ethics, though their personalities are quite different.
