I think since there are so many different types of races, some of them should be explained for your better understanding. There are Junior, Classic & Senior Races. Junior (Below Age 3) Classic (Age 3 only) Senior (Age 3 or above) There are only 3 Classic Races, as you know the Satsuki Sho (2000m), Japanese Derby (2400m) and Kikuka-shō(3000m). What makes the Triple Crown so hard is 3000m for Kikuka-shō is totally different from others, which means the horse needs to be capable of running long distances too. Senior Races: (There are a lot G1 races) Let me just focus on the most popular races for now: For Takarazuka Kinen & Arima Kinen, horses are mainly voted by fans to participate. If your horse is not popular enough, you have no chance to race. For Tenou Sho, there are Spring (3200m) and Fall (2000m), The Spring Tenou Sho is the longest distance race in Japan. Japan Cup (2400m): It is an International G1 race, in which foreign horses can also participate. The winning prize is the most in Japan races (equal to Arima Kiren).
