Just replace General Du Lugo with De Gaulle and you have the real live reference to the Free French returning to France on D-Day. They never accepted defeat and fought on to the end. Tanya, with her knowledge from her previous life, simply wanted to prevent that from happening and end the war before any other major power could intervene and turn it into a world war.
