The "true self" issue that you've expressed distaste for was actually addressed in Neko White. Black Hanekawa tells the tiger that the parts of the self that you repress are definitely a part of you, but so is the part that wishes to repress them. There is no singular "True Self," as you hate to say, but that there are many different (possibly contradictory) parts that make up the full self. Hence, the outburst in Otori is not Nadeko's "true self," but rather just a part of her self that she represses. The same is true of the Kuchinawa version of Nadeko we see here.

2025-01-30 05:58:51 +0000 UTCNadeko in this world isn't the one from the outburst. She's the fake snake oddity, Kuchinawa/Serpent as they call it. That's not the same. Of course, because she made up that oddity herself, it has elements of her personality, and some of them spring up in her outburst. But how Serpent acts and how Nadeko acted when she had that outburst, do not fully overlap. Serpent is Nadeko's "other side" just in the sense that it is a personality she made up (literally mostly to fool the viewer, to have a "decoy" story, with Serpent as the perpetrator and Nadeko as the victim), but inherently a personality you make up will always include elements of yourself in it.
