Toothbrush | Nisemonogatari Episode 8 REACTION

???????

Comments

Nothing to do with being "puritan". Its just distracting and cringe in Nise and there is a reason they drastically dialed it back after this season. Because it actually distracts from the great storytelling.

Araragi flat out has sex with Senjougahara after the confrontation with Kaiki during the last episode of Karen Bee, I think that makes her fit into this interpretation very well. She is obviously the person Araragi is (likely) most connected to on an emotional level, and she is the only person that he has a real sexual connection with as well. There is more to the Araragi/Senjou relationship that I could mention here but I think it is too early in the story to point it out yet, I think there is a reason why Senjou is not as blatantly sexualized as other characters though. I can't really say much more about Hanekawa without spoiling things that Mat hasn't seen yet.

If this interpretation is correct it makes me wonder what about Senjougahara. The only scene I can think of when she was in any way sexually depicted would be when she was changing before ritual to meet with the crab. And even then Araragi didn't really focus on it much. But aside from that I can't remember any other scene when she was shown in any sexually charged way(I think I remember something later that I guess kinda could count but it wasn't araragi's pov). He doesn't even give any focus to what she is wearing. Taking it more literally you could interpret it that he focuses more on who Senjougahara is rather than her looks which makes their relationship seem very pure. The more I think about it the weirder it feels that the one main character is in relationship with is the least sexually depicted out of all in the series.(I would like to note here that she did act seductively during ride on their date so that may be completely breaking my interpretation but I decided to ignore it for now) That interpretation would work also for Hanekawa because Araragi isn't looking at who she really is but his idealized interpretation of her(or at least he was for some time, not sure about now or later). So in other words he was focusing on how she appear on the outside(symbolized by attraction to her physical appearance) not how she is inside. On the first glance she appears to be stereotypical class rep but from the first moments of kizumonogatari we know that there is something more to it because of the underwear she's wearing(it didn't fit stereotypical class rep). I believe this is intentional choice to show who hanekawa is with just her design. Very prim and proper on the surface but hiding something more taboo or improper(or idk what ward to use) underneath. If my theory is correct or at least not wrong that makes it very interesting in context of Araragi's attraction to her. This attraction he has to physical representation of her dark side is representation of his inability to notice her dark side or perhaps even refusal to notice it.(Of course I'm talking here mainly about Kizu and Bake because it looks like he acknowledged hanekawa flaws a little after ending of bake). The same way Senjougahara and Hanekawa are being depicted in completely opposite ways in this context I think Hachikuji and Shinobu also are two oposites(at least here in nise). Shinobu is depicted in very sexual way but araragi doesn't act like that towards her and Hachikuji isn't depicted sexually but the way he acts towards her is very sexual. I wasted all my brainpower on analyzing Senjougahara and Hanekawa so I don't know what that means but I think it's interesting thing to notice. I may be wrong about all these of course since I feel like this symbolism is a few levels above my ability to understand but maybe I hit something.

ofc it's weak when you're a puritan

Nise is just not very good in my opinion. I seen a ton of people stop watching Monogatari with Nise because the fanservice and weird sexualisation of everything combined with a disjointed plot is such a downgrade from Bake. Personally i think Nise is one of the weakest seasons of the show, the only good things that came from it are Kaiki and the Tsukihi Phoenix arc which was very good. Well and that bath talk between Araragi and Shinobu was excellent but also had the "too much" problem that Nise has in a lot of scenes. Luckily the quality of the show goes way up again after Nise and the weird constant horniness, while never completely gone, does get dialed back a lot.

It means that NisiOisiN wrote this for himself, to appeal to people like him! Like ME! :D FANTASTIC Episode!

Araragi (or at least within the realm of his POV) uses sexual attraction and these crazy sexual antics as a stand-in for emotional attachment. You can see this especially with Hachikuji, his completely insane and over the top reactions to her are emblematic of how emotionally comfortable he is with her, he basically uses her as a therapist and talks about all of his problems with her. Hanekawa is similar, she is obviously very sexually attractive to Araragi, especially in Kizu where her design is even more so sexualized, because she is the first person he connected with to break out of his crazy anti-friend mindset he had in Kizu. The bath scene with Shinobu is another good example of this, that scene is the most blatantly sexual situation Araragi has been in with a character in Nise, and yet he does not react to Shinobu in a sexual way like he does with other characters. That shows how emotionally strained and uneasy Araragi felt with her after everything that happened. And yet again, the infamous toothbrush scene, is more of this. I think after Araragi's emotional moments with Karen in the previous episode, they formed a deeper connection as siblings than before (even mentioned in the last line of this episode). That's what this insanely sexualized, ridiculous episode is showing. Nise takes fan service in anime in general and satirizes it, and also makes these completely unhinged scenes actually mean something to our main character. That's how I see it, anyway.

peak fiction

I can somewhat explain it, but its all subjective after digesting the entire series. So you should make your own opinion about it too.

Nise is just kinda weird. You could theorize a bunch of if this scene means anything. Nah, Araragis being araragis.
