I know you mentioned struggling what to call him, pronoun wise. Id you notice on the title screen, it says "this is him", which is a subtitle for the series. So for makoto, it seems he sees himself as a boy who likes to dress pretty and be pretty. So it's safe to address him as he. Of course, if someone is trans and sees themselves in him that's cool too. This series is so good, it's possible that might adapt it entirely in one season. There's not really enough for two seasons. One thing you see here with aoi , and it continues showing up, is everyone is multidimensional. There are no monsters or angels in this series, even the bad people are very human and even understandable. I'm so excited for you to see the rest.
