Upcoming Patreon changes

Hi!

Patreon is making a few big changes. Other creators wrote about it better than I could in these links:

https://www.patreon.com/posts/important-update-114615305

https://www.patreon.com/posts/upcoming-patreon-114047492

Basically, two big things:

1 - For new patrons who subscribe to a campaign in the Apple store, you'll be charged an extra 30% fee. Just make a subscription using the web version, or the Android app, and you should avoid it. You can keep using the Patreon app on your iOS phone after that. It will only affect NEW subscribers.

2 - New patrons will now be charged in the day they join my Patreon, instead of in the first day of each month. Again, not my decision, but an imposition from Patreon/Apple. So if you join me on November 15, you'll only be charged again on December 15.

Point 2 is the most troublesome because I always release my new models as a bundle in the first of each month, and the ones who join me on a later date get the same download links. With the new subscription charging system, a person who would join me today, October 31, would get October models, and then tomorrow, November 1, they would get November's models, paying for just one subscription.

Patreon has no automation tools to help me with that. I wish I could set up a message that would be triggered whenever a patron completed a new month with me. So it's impossible for me to keep control of my release pack this way.

What should I do now? I'd like to ask your patience in the next few months, while I try to deal with this new situation. I'll probably try things that won't be the best solution until I find something that works.

Right now, I can think of two alternatives:

1 - Releasing models in the end of each month, closing them for future patrons.

2 - Releasing models one by one, instead of as a full pack, for all patrons subscribed to my campaign as I finish them, while keeping my three previously released models available to all newcomers.

If you have more ideas, or if you read other people talk about possible solutions elsewhere, please share them with me here, as I'd love to think of the best way to handle this situation.

Fine by me:)

Thank you for the feedback. I'll probably start releasing models in the end of the month, which wouldn't change things much for you ;)

Torrida Minis

Yes, that makes sense to me. Thank you for the suggestion!

Torrida Minis

That seems very much like an end of the month release, which is probably what I'll end up doing.

Torrida Minis

I like this too! But I have a feeling most people would prefer the end of the month release at this moment, so that's probably what I'll end up doing.

I wish Patreon was more like Tribes too! They have automation tools that makes things a lot easier for creators, and the integrated library is a wonderful thing. It's a pity they don't allow fanart models to be sold there, that's why I don't have a Tribes profile.

Torrida Minis

All right, that's good to know. I'll probably try the end of the month release first, and in case it doesn't work well, I may try something else.

Torrida Minis

Yes, I'm just a guy doing everything, but I liked this sort of arrangement. In my schedule, I try to finish all models in a week, so it wouldn't be troublesome to release each model as I finish them, and it would mean patrons would get a new model every week. Unless there's something I'm not seeing, of course. Right now, I'm considering the end of the month release, but my personal preference would be the weekly release scheme.

As someone with a lot of patreons and never enough time to print them in the moment, I really like having all the models for each one available at the same time to download all at once. That way I don't have to stress about missing a model.

If you do transition to "end of month release", you could release half of the models at the beginning of the month, and half at the end (if anyone cares too much about almost 2 month gap between releases). After that, releases 1 month apart, at the end of the month.

Jupp3

one of the other patreons that I have has this idea (I think its pretty good): For those who join from the 1st to the last day of the month, you will receive the links for the current month's models on the 1st of the following month, with 15 days to redeem them

Zinabrio

I am not saying to do more models, but currently we get 4 models per month, with a delay, there would be no need to do additional work at all, sculpt at the same comfortable rate, and instead of dumping them all in one go, just upload one per week, it doesn't change at all the amount of creations or hard work they already invest, so I think you misunderstand what I wrote above

Klaus13

It is

Max

Yeah but the reality of Carlos (CA3D) is that they are a much larger team working there. Torrida tobmy understanding is just one person. Its already hard enough to work constantly to deliver the models we get in this timeframe, plus social media, plus replying patreon.. To me, a weekly delivery is not realistic.

Max

From a merchant perspective, I like the models sprinkled across the month. I have a few patrons that do this and it’s nice. Avoids the onslaught of models at the end of the month.

FISHING CAT

There are creators who only publish their models for one week and then delete the download message. If you miss the release (e.g. vacation absence) you can write a direct message and you will receive a download link. This is not user-friendly, but it helps the creator. I personally appreciate MyMiniFactory Tribes because the files are transferred directly to my personal library. Or download via Cults, but never via itch.io, because that s..t still doesn't work. ;-)

Kammf

Is that 30% every month?

John McCarthy

Not suggesting you do something you are uncomfortable with, or won't work for you, but there is a another Patreon I have subscribed to for a while now, and they way they navigated this for a while to get around the lack of automation, without the need to publish everything as one giant pack, is that they announce the models for the next month, then every.. I don't know, week or week and a half during that month, they release just 1 of those models, the long term patrons get a steady trickle supply of models, which also helps things not feel overwhelming, and the new patrons, only get access to what was already there for the month, as well as what comes the week after they join (+ Their welcome pack of course) This studio is "CA 3D Studios" If you want to investigate, or if you want, I can send you a screenshot of their "Calendar" every patron gets at the start of each month, regardless of what you decide the important thing is that you work in a way that allows longevity and comfort for yourself, because no one will benefit if it harms your work / life style or creates burn out, much love Torrida!

I'd go for all models to be released at the end of the month. Seems to be the fairest of the options.
