They thought there were no humans on earth even though we know humans are tough and resilent. They don't know that lions, tigers etc might not be edible. They are kids who were raised by people who have never been to the earth before.

Just her mom and brother. Which means she never formed attachments the way the rest of us have. Her entire life, all she has known is 4 walls, a mother and a brother. Which makes her story so much more interesting as we see her become one of the best characters in the show...IMO.
