I think you can get the general idea of what happened in the first few seasons through their conversations. They actually show it in season 9.

And after that, he befriended barry and became his “apprentice”. after a while they have created a bond and thawne is a great hero. BUT barry finds out thawne has been creating crimes so he can fix it and look like the hero. So Barry throws thawne to the side and forgets about him, and returns to his time/the past. Thawne eventually grows a true great hatred towards barry due to the fact that barry has a life and family and friends in the past when thawne has nothing . he thinks barry forgot about him, So thawne ends up doing something about it. Thawne starts creating mayhem and finds out in the flash museum… BARRY’S ARCH NEMESIS IS IN FACT HIM. So thawne takes his destiny and makes it his reality, his purpose in life, is to ruin barry’s. I LEFT OUT SO MUCH BUT I WASNT ABLE TO ADD ALL THE DETAILS. ILL HAVE THE WHOLE THING LATER ON 21!

So I suggest you watch Arrow all the way up to season 3 and then once you are all caught up you can watch an episode of flash season 2 and a episode of arrow season 4 back to back so there isn’t any confusion.
