You know, for all the warning you gave about it being raw, the only grammatical issue I had was with "And he worried, now that his hope had been freed, if this picture turned out to be false, it would destroy him." And that's easy enough to fix with minimal effort - one comma could just be changed to a dash. I like the momentum we're suddenly picking up, and I can't wait for his next face to face conversation with "someone"! :D
