As people read The Last Messenger they are seeing similarities to the Divine Apostasy series. None of these are intentional. The Last Messenger was the story that brought me out of a long period of no writing a decade ago. I have been struggling a little to revise it as I'm a different writer now than I was ten years ago. Even with my revision, it reads differently to me than my current writing.
But, one thing that is interesting to me is how my themes haven't changed very much. The ideas I loved back then are still the ideas I love now. I'm fascinated by the coming of age stories where naive beliefs are challenged by harsh realities. I love martial arts and things you learn having hidden meanings. Parents who are not what they seem. Shy, awkward, and socially isolated characters blossoming. Divine involvement with stakes that affect the world. Sentient creatures and items. Fairness, and balancing free will with the community's needs.
Regardless of my love of the same ideas, one thing is for sure, the more I write in the Divine Apostasy series, the more I'm sucked into the world. The characters are so real I find it difficult to express everything that is happening. I feel like for every emotional beat I catch, there are ten that I miss.
Anyway, this is kind of a weird update. It just surprised me a bit to see the similarities in theme between stories ten years apart. I guess it shouldn't have. Sometimes I feel like I'm still that shy kid who loved spending Saturday mornings watching Kung Fu Theatre. Which, honestly, was a pretty awesome time.
Okay, enough of all that.
Because I kind of made a mess with all the updates I've done two things. First, as you probably already noticed, The Last Messenger will now be released on Wednesdays. In addition, I've added tags to the chapters so you can filter and get what you want. I've added the following: "Divine Apostasy", "DA4", "Last Messenger".
I've opened up chapters 3 and 4 to Root.
I've opened up chapters 5 and 6 to Harvester.
I've added chapters 7 and 8 to Step Master, Blapy's Favorite, and Divine.
