2024-12-08 00:35:37 +0000 UTCThanks Priyanka and (Joe and Chris) - this movie was similarly formative for me. I hadn’t seen anything like it either. I remember my desi friends recommending it to me and resisting because I didn’t believe it would really speak to me … I was wrong, and the film sparked my adult love of film and storytelling (even though I completely recognise its flaws). A couple of things: i agree that the romance is redundant from a story point of view but bear in mind we hadn’t seen a whole lot of interracial relationships onscreen at that point - certainly not desi-white ones. (And Gurinder Chadha is married to an American of mixed race - these kinds of relationships come up a lot in her films: bride and prejudice, viceroy’s house, Beecham house). Also her dad played cricket, not soccer … it’s sort of like baseball but longer and in straight lines rather than diamonds.
