So, UNBREAKABLE: To me, quite a good movie that I have reservations about that make me seem "mixed" on it...but I don't feel "mixed" on it, I'm much more positive than not. It's beautifully made, Samuel L. Jackson's excellent, it really draws you in...but its self-seriousness and ponderousness fall on the side of "π‘ππ ππ’πβ" for me and almost come across as the work of someone who's a bit ashamed of + needs to justify being sort-of interested in comic books. The deconstructionist quality, that's intrinsic to the thing, that IS the movie, I'm not saying I can't roll with that, it just feels somewhat strained to me - I mean, if your opening note is telling the audience, "See, comic books are actually very popular," you, um...don't really need that opening note then, do you? Anyway, it's been several years since I've seen the film, I might feel differently if I watch it again today. What I REALLY don't see changing is that I love the ending - "twist" is a funny word for it, too, because...sure, I suppose it is, but what we're really seeing there is inevitability, marvelous inevitability as the tale finally moves where we knew (whether you knew you knew it or not) it had to go. I was down for a sequel, but then word of mouth on GLASS was just not making me eager to see the one that eventually came about.
