Hey everyone,
I’ve received a lot of messages asking for another practice plan, specifically how I would structure it for only one hour. I’m excited to share an example of how to practice efficiently in that time. A lot of people don’t have endless hours to dedicate to practice, but the good news is, it’s not about the quantity—it’s about the quality. With just one hour, you can make significant progress and I’ll show you how!
The link for accessing the sheet is down below. If you’d like tabs and GP files as examples or inspiration for your practice routine, they’re available for all Premium Members.
General Info
The key is to stay consistent over a long period of time, and whenever you practice, focus 100% on just that. Put your phone on airplane mode, turn off videos or podcasts—just you, your guitar and things you need for your session (metronome, timer,...).
Warm-up
I recommend combining your warm-up with learning new scale shapes and chord voicings. Feel free to replace the notes in the example routine with what you’re working on. I used "harmonic minor" as an example, as many people only learn one shape, but I’ve put together a sheet to help you cover the scale across the fretboard. The same goes for chords—swap them for what you're focusing on, or use the sheets I’ve posted.
Repertoire
This means transcribing a song or solo you want to learn. Practice it daily for about two weeks, then move on to something new to keep things fresh.
Technique
As many of you know, my method involves practicing all types of string-changing scenarios. I suggest focusing on 1-note-per-string (1NPS), 2-notes-per-string (2NPS), and 3-notes-per-string (3NPS) separately. You can find more exercises for these techniques in my Picking Masterclass here on Patreon. For tremolo bursts, I like to practice them as shown in my 15-Minute Tremolo Picking Endurance exercise—do bursts at faster tempos, then gradually extend the phrases.
These are the most important elements to make real progress, speaking from my own experience as an active player and teacher.
Feel free to ask questions in the comments and have a great day!
