Practicing Jazz Standards
Added 2023-10-03 19:41:33 +0000 UTCI practiced a lot of Jazz Improvisation concepts and jazz standards (tunes) over the years. And I still do. That’s also what influences me in my metal solo playing a lot.
I think most of you play metal so I’m curious if you ever got in touch with Jazz Standards or jam sessions around your living area.

that's awesome! and I actually think that's the way to start; checking out different modes and harmonies and playing over backing tracks. That's how I compose my solos too.

But most of metal music I would compare with classical music because it is all about accuracy and technical abilities. In Jazz the focus is more on improvisational concepts and interaction between the players. But there is a lot to learn from both sides. I'm definitely going to share some of my thoughts about my jazz approach and how I use my knowledge for metal compositions.

2023-10-05 22:07:17 +0000 UTCFor me its like the total opposite. I started with metal and when I heard you (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6riXIdhnmpQ) I started to playing a lot of fusion/jazz backing tracks. First to improve my scales and modes. Second, pretty straight forward...ITS FUN!

2023-10-04 19:37:36 +0000 UTCNo. Concerning the aspect of playing I never got in touch with the jazz stuff but I love listening to Jim Hall, Joscho Stephan and so forth. I guess the fear of intimidation plays/played a role. Jazz is such a broad field.

2023-10-04 18:40:35 +0000 UTCThat’s very interesting. I mostly played jazz the last two decades and trying two reactivate my youth skills in heavy metal … of course there is playing technique , but for me it’s not that easy two keep things simple and sounding good in in the standard heavy metal context … for example a minor chord in jazz can be Couleuren in many ways and creating sounds while „noodeling“ the tone Fundus is not that hard. Complete opposite in metal for me … improvisation sounds often horrible due to too many jazz concepts try’s 😂 Would be great if you can teach how you approach jazz concepts in soloing and writing without leaving the metal context ….
