Tabs - Guitar Pro

As you've probably already heard, I'm now officially the Lead Guitarist of the band Daath!

Krimh introduced me to them back in 2022. Over the past couple of months, we have been writing and recording new songs for the upcoming album.

Just like in Obsidious, we use Guitar Pro to communicate musically. If we want to make a change in the existing composition, we simply re-record that part in our DAW, adjust the MIDI drums, and overwrite the Guitar Pro file, ensuring everyone knows the latest update.

I use Guitar Pro 8 for writing tabs for Obsidious, Daath, and my solo project. In my opinion, it's the best notation software for tablature writing. I've experimented with Sibelius, MuseScore, Dorico, and Finale, but to be honest, I didn't stick with Guitar Pro exclusively for a long time because the layout options were quite limited, especially for chord symbols. Also it was impossible to write more complex rhythms like a triplet within a quintuplet for a long time.

But Guitar Pro is getting better and better with every update and with the 8th version, they made a huge step up. Here you can check out the new version if you haven't yet: https://www.guitar-pro.com/#ae779

What is your experience with this software and which one is the version you are working with?

I too am using Guitar Pro (Version 7.6) and will be giving 8 a try soon. Never tried Sibelius, MuseScore, Dorico and Finale. Just recently encountered Soundslice because I was searching for Solfeggietto A minor tabs. Soundslice has a cool version played by Brandon Ellis. So excited that you are now lead guitarist of the band Dååth! They were new to me until a couple of months ago when No Rest No End was published. Their stuff is so interesting, versatile and cool. Oh boy...

That's a good point there. I have to say that I cooperated with Steffen for the Diluvium songbook which was not very easy. And very honestly, based on the mistakes in there you can tell that it was quite a stressful time. And one of them is the inaccuracy of the "real" notes being played. Ideally both, tabs AND notation are completely correct although you can get a lot of double sharps and flats which could make things even more complicated as they actually are for some people. It's not easy to find the right balance. But yeah in the end tabs are there to find the right spot on the fretboard and notation is there to understand the harmony behind it.

For me harmony takes only place in standard notation, tabs supporting finding the right spot …

Take the official guitar tablature (the book) for Obscura's Emergent Evolution for instance. Since the guitar is tuned down a whole step the first note is a G, but an A is notated (same goes of course for the following notes and some other songs). I believe this is the same inaccuracy that you guys are speaking of? This is no offense since the tablatures all in all are fantastic and have helped me such a lot!

That’s true. A lot of people are not taking care of the right key. I’ve noticed that too

That’s interesting! I’ve never tried it before. Thanks for sharing that

I like it, but most guys don’t use the right key signature, so tabs are right, but notation is always in C … I like the Orientation in the notes. It’s easier to recognise key changes and “foreign” notes. With the key shapes in mind I like to find my way getting supported by the tabs …. Overall excellent product

Im using soundslice, it is kind of guitar pro (also support gp format) and it is free.
