The Struggles of Weiss Schnee at trying to make the dense boy notice her.
---------------------
Weiss Schnee had faced many challenges in her life.
Dust theory exams. Combat against Grimm twice her size. Her father’s suffocating expectations. Even surviving Ruby’s cooking. All of them—somehow—overcome.
But this?
This was her greatest trial yet.
Trying to make Issei Hyoudou—the perverted, battle-hardened, hopelessly dense boy—notice her feelings.
And not just in a “Hey Weiss, you’ve been smiling more lately” kind of way.
No.
She wanted him to realize that she liked him. That she like liked him—with all his weirdness, his honest eyes, his habit of falling asleep mid-class, and his annoying but endearing habit of perving and appreciating the female form. Not in a creepy way, not anymore—there was a raw sincerity to him. He was unapologetically himself. He treated everyone like people, not pieces on a board. Including her.
Especially her.
And she wanted him to ask her out. That last part was important.
She wasn’t going to confess first. Absolutely not. She had standards. Dignity. Self-respect.
Besides… she wanted to know that he liked her that way. That he looked at her and thought ‘She’s the one I want to hold hands with under the night sky.’
So she tried. Oh, did she try.
—---------------------------
Step One: Strategic Proximity
It began simply. Sitting next to him more often in class. Joining him in the library “coincidentally.” Seeking him out during downtime.
At first, she convinced herself it was for study purposes. Issei had a surprisingly sharp mind for battle theory, and a terrible attention span when it came to anything else. She could help him focus. And in turn, maybe he’d notice how her laugh had softened around him. How she smiled more.
And he did smile at her.
Brightly. With that boyish, guileless look.
“Thanks for helping me again, Weiss,” he said after one of their late study sessions, rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly. “You’re like… my smart guardian angel or something.”
Her heart fluttered.
“That’s what friends are for,” She replied evenly, trying not to show too much and unknowingly making the situation worse as she called him a friend.
‘Friend.’ The word echoed in her head felt like a slap as she was unable to be honest.
—---------------------------
Step Two: Emotional Bait
Next, she tried letting him in more.
Her past. Her feelings. Her family.
They were sitting near the training grounds, watching the horizon fade into gold and crimson. A quiet moment. Just the two of them.
She told him about her father. Not everything—but enough. Enough to show her vulnerability. Her loneliness.
Issei had listened, eyes serious for once.
“Weiss…” he said softly, almost reverently. “You’re strong. Way stronger than I thought.”
She blinked. “You thought I was weak?”
“No! I mean—no! Just, y’know, fancy rich girl. I didn’t expect… all this stuff. You hide it well.”
She looked down at her hands, trying not to let her hopes rise too fast.
“People assume a lot about me.”
He smiled at her, warm and gentle. “I won’t.”
‘There. That look. That tone. That warmth… Say something. Ask me.’
Then—
“We should do this more often. Just talk, y’know? I wish i had more to share to make this fair. But it’s nice. You’re nice.”
‘Nice. Nice?!’ She almost bit her tongue in frustration.
—------------------------------------
Step Three: The “Not a Date” Date
Weiss organized a visit to Vale. Just her and Issei. She insisted it was “ Dust shopping for her weapon.” In truth, she wanted time alone with him. Somewhere casual. Somewhere she could test the waters.
She wore a lovely winter coat, white and tailored to her form, hair brushed and curled slightly more than usual. She even let a little color onto her lips.
Issei showed up in a red hoodie and a goofy grin.
“I brought snacks!” He declared, holding up a bag of spicy chips. “In case we get hungry on the way!”
Despite everything, her heart squeezed. ‘He's trying. In his own idiotic way.’
They walked the city. She gently brushed her hand against his a few times. Subtle. Testing. Inviting.
He just smiled and pointed at store signs.
At lunch, she leaned forward across the table, letting her voice drop.
“Issei. If someone liked you… how would you want them to tell you?”
He blinked, mid-bite. “Huh? Like… liked me liked me?”
“Yes,” she said, eyes locked on his.
He leaned back, thinking hard. “I dunno. I guess… just say it. Straight up.”
Her lips tightened.
“And what if they wanted you to say it first?”
“Then I’d never know.” He said cheerfully. “I’m bad with hints, I think.”
She froze.
No. No, he can’t be… this dense. He’s not this—
“And besides,” he added, “it’s not like anyone likes me like that.”
“…What.”
“Well, I mean, not here. Maybe in my old life, but at Beacon? Nah. You guys are all too amazing. I’m just the loud pervy guy.”
She stared at him. Genuinely speechless.
—-------------------------------
Later That Night
Weiss buried her face in her pillow and screamed. “I wore makeup for that idiot!”
Ruby, peeking in through the doorway, blinked. “Wait. Do you admit to like like him?”
Weiss whipped around, eyes blazing. “Of course I do!”
Ruby flinched. “Geez, okay! I just—wow. Does he know?”
Weiss sank back onto the bed, defeated. “No. And apparently he never will unless I hit him with a hammer labeled, I like you, you moron.”
Ruby thought for a moment. “Have you considered just asking him out?”
“I want him to ask me! Is that so hard to understand?!”
Ruby gave her a long look, then left the room muttering something about “two of the densest people in the world destined to die single.”
—--------------------------------
Meanwhile… in Issei's Head as he layed in his own room at Beacon.
‘Weiss is spending a lot of time with me lately…
She even laughed at one of my jokes. That usually never happens.
Maybe she’s finally opening up. We’re good friends now.
I should invite her to have a meal with me. I bet she’d love that.’
He smiled to himself, completely unaware of the romantic storm gathering around him.
Can't believe I still write this cringe. This is truly a guilty pleasure.
