SxD: A Moment of Understanding (How Issei and Weiss Became Friends)

Issei sat down on the bench nearby, stretching his arms behind his head. “Man, this place is still so weird to me.” He tilted his head back, staring up at the night sky. “Honestly, I don’t know what I’m supposed to do here.”

Weiss frowned, hesitating before sitting down next to him—though she kept a respectable distance. “What do you mean?”

For a moment, Issei didn’t answer. His usual carefree expression wavered just slightly. “I don’t remember much, just my name, who I am, and some things that don’t make sense.” He exhaled, drumming his fingers against his knee. “But now? I’m here. No one’s looking for me. I have no idea what to do. My past, my purpose—it’s all missing. It’s… weird.”

Weiss studied him carefully. For the first time since she’d met him, he wasn’t being loud, reckless, or embarrassing. He was just… lost.

And that struck a chord.

She looked down at her hands, fingers tightening slightly. “I understand.”

Issei blinked, turning his head toward her. “Huh?”

Weiss exhaled. “I’ve spent my whole life fighting to prove myself—to my family, to my father, to everyone who looked at me and saw my last name and his daughter instead of me.” Her voice was softer now, the sharp edge replaced by something more vulnerable. “Beacon was supposed to be my escape. My chance to be Weiss Schnee, not the heiress. But even here, I feel like I’m still… stuck.”

There was a pause. A strange sense of familiarity tugged at the back of Issei’s mind, like he’d been in this situation before—with another girl, another conversation—but the memory wouldn’t come. Then—

“Wow. That sucks.”

Weiss’s head snapped toward him, eyes narrowing. “Excuse me?”

Issei winced. “Okay, bad phrasing! What I meant is—I get it. Feeling like no matter how hard you try, you’re still stuck in someone else’s expectations? Yeah, that’s rough.”

Weiss opened her mouth to argue… but found that she couldn’t. Because he did understand. Maybe not in the exact same way, but enough that his words weren’t empty.

Silence settled between them for a moment.

Then, Issei smirked. “You know, you’re not half bad when you’re not yelling at me.”

Weiss scoffed, tilting her head away with an exaggerated huff. “And you’re not completely unbearable when you’re not talking about harems and breasts.”

Issei gasped dramatically, placing a hand over his chest. “Does this mean we’re finally friends?”

Weiss rolled her eyes, standing up. “It means I can tolerate you.”

Issei leaned back on the bench, lacing his fingers behind his head. “Yep. Friendship unlocked. I should get an achievement for this.”

Weiss paused mid-step, glancing at him from the corner of her eye. For the first time in a long time… she didn’t feel so alone.

And that, annoyingly enough, was because of him

A gentle murmur of activity from Beacon’s corridors drifted over as the conversation lulled. In the distance, Ruby’s infectious laughter mixed with the clamor of other students preparing for the night. Issei’s eyes wandered momentarily toward the lighthearted bustle, a familiar, irreverent glint igniting despite the fog of lost memories.

“You know,” he said with a sly grin, “I may have forgotten my past, but one thing’s clear—Beacon sure knows how to keep things interesting.” His voice carried that trademark blend of mischief and clueless charm. A passing group of an all female team caught his attention, and without missing a beat, he added. “Especially when there’s a few pretty faces in the mix.”

Weiss’s eyes narrowed in mock disapproval, though a reluctant smile tugged at the corners of her mouth. “Issei, must you always mix your... observations with your perversity?” she teased, her tone exasperated. Yet beneath the banter lay a sincere understanding. Here, amidst the chaos of Beacon and the weight of her own expectations, his irreverence was a breath of fresh air—a reminder that even in this strange new world, authenticity could spark genuine connection.

For a brief moment, as the sounds of Beacon’s evening swelled around them, both realized that even if their pasts were fraught with duty and mystery, the present offered them something invaluable: a friendship.
