Surely you remember the first design of Shadow Boy with the spikes on his shoulder pads.
Red pupils could also be seen beneath his helmet, as well the helmet stripes.
We decided to remove the spikes for two reasons. 1-It was too similar to the design of Shadow Boss (the character it is inspired by). 2-The spikes would cause complications when animating.
Then, we take advantage of the helmet's color change when he puts on the Powersuit, to replace the pupils with a red line of vision, Robocop style.
